Biz, U.S.: Everybody’s favorite ponzi schemer, R. Allen Stanford, in custody

  • He surrendered to FBI agents while hanging at hs gf’s place. Stanford, who’s on the hook for $8 billion in freaking fraud, was arrested last night in the case. According to his attorney, Dick DeGuerin, here’s how it went down: “Federal agents in black SUVs surrounded his girlfriend’s house this afternoon, and just sat there. I told him to walk out and introduce himself. So he did, and he asked them, ‘If you’ve got a warrant, take me into custody. If you don’t, I’m going to Houston.’ And they did, so they arrested him.” He’ll be in court today. source

Biz, U.S.: Bernie Madoff: A man compelled to have killer returns. (Huh?)

  • While I never promised a specific rate of return to any client, I felt compelled to satisfy my clients’ expectations, at any cost.
  • Bernard Madoff • Explaining why he created his Ponzi scheme during a courtroom monologue while pleading guilty. According to him, he wanted to keep giving out continually good rates of return because he wanted his investors to love him. (No word on how he felt about his penthouse.) • source

Biz: Elie Wiesel: Not a big Bernard Madoff fan

  • ‘Sociopath,’ ‘psychopath,’ it means there is a sickness, a pathology. This man knew what he was doing. I would simply call him thief, scoundrel, criminal.
  • Elie Wiesel • Talking about Bernard Madoff, who made off with $15 million from Wiesel’s charity organization as part of the $50 billion he stole from investors. Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor and Nobel Prize-winning writer, says Madoff should be held in solitary confinement with pictures of his victims constantly showing on a screen. • source

U.S.: R. Allen Stanford: He could run, couldn’t hide

  • Where they found him FBI agents found the Texas-residing Stanford hiding out in Virginia, evading authorities trying to serve him with civil suit papers. He vanished Tuesday and somehow made it to Fredricksburg, because every alleged Ponzi schemer with a mustache goes there. Clearly. It’s the place to be.
  • He’s kinda like Waldo When found, we imagine Stanford was wearing a striped red shirt, glasses and a wool cap, trying to hide from authorities with his billions of dollars and tarnished reputation. He hasn’t been charged with any crime, but neither was Waldo, and everyone was looking for him, too! source
