U.S.: NYC has another idea to expand New Jersey’s subway service

  • Commuters in New Joisey, you aren’t screwed yet. Weeks ago, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced he was killing off a massive public works project to get a subway line under the Hudson River into New York City. While fiscal conservatives feted the decision, many long-suffering commuters felt burned. New York City is considering coming to the rescue, offering to extend a subway line out of the city and into New Jersey – at a fraction of the shuttered plan’s cost:
  • $11.4
    billion
the estimated cost (with overruns) of the New Jersey subway project that Gov. Chris Christie killed
  • $5.3
    billion
the estimated cost of New York extending the No. 7 subway line under the Hudson River source
  • » Agreement still needed: While Michael Bloomberg’s administration is spearheading this, incoming NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo, along with Christie, would have to come to terms with the plan, which, while less expensive, definitely isn’t cheap. But the long-term benefits could prove worth it.

Music: Showoffs: Atomic Tom plays song using iPhones on NYC subway

  • Want to get attention for your music? Find a clever way to get noticed on YouTube. And make sure it involves iPhones. And possibly subway cars. That’s what the four dudes of NYC band Atomic Tom did, and it’s worked out pretty well for them in the last two days (200,000+ views). If we were these guys, we’d probably just ditch the instruments altogether and keep doing stuff like this, because they’re insanely good at it.
  • iPhones + Subway = awesome Our money is on these guys actually having their instruments and lying about it because it makes the whole thing a better story. That said, they seem waayyyyy too talented at their iPhone instruments. Clever marketing either way.
  • For comparison’s sake Here’s the same band playing the same song on NYC music show Fearless Music. As you’ll see, the iPhone version does a good job of getting very close to this even without the benefit of guitars or drums. Show-offs. source

Culture: Whiny babies Cablevision, News Corp. fight over money in public

  • The question becomes, how long is it going to last and who’s going to blink first?
  • BTIG media analyst Richard Greenfield • Regarding Cablevision’s dropping of local Fox network stations from its lineup in a financial dispute. Who gets hurt when giant media companies fight over stupid crap like money? Sports fans, of course. If this isn’t resolved by Sunday, they could lose a number of football games. If it’s not settled by tonight, they could lose game one of the NLCS – especially problematic because the Philadelphia Phillies are in the series and Cablevision covers mostly Philly and NYC. We know you babies love being right and winning a war over money, but most people don’t like being inconvenienced. source

U.S.: Trees fall in Brooklyn: Here’s the crazy tornado that killed one

  • This video is crazy, but not as crazy as the fact that a tornado hit NYC. Brooklyn, Staten Island and Queens to be exact. The storm hit fast and had winds as fast as 100 miles per hour. It even affected The King of Queens. “It’s like a war zone out here,” said female Queens resident Gene King. “Trees are down, some houses have come apart.” Hope everyone is OK in NYC tonight. (Thanks @BreakingNews for the video clip.) source

U.S.: NYC cabbie stabbing victim Ahmed Sharif needs your help

  • My guess is that he’ll be unable to work for at least four months. He can’t even pick up his baby because of the wounds to his arms. He can’t turn his neck.
  • New York Taxi Workers Alliance spokesperson Bhairavi Desai • Regarding the physical and mental anguish he’s suffered as a result of the attack last week. And he’s broke and can’t work; he needs the money to feed his child. Donations have been low so far; as soon as we saw the story, we donated $30. We recommend (and hope) you do the same. Fight hate with your wallet. Help Ahmed feed his baby. source

U.S.: Now cab drivers in NYC are getting stabbed ‘cuz they’re Muslim

  • crazy A New York cabbie was allegedly attacked by some film student the other night. He had been stabbed multiple times.
  • crazier Said student was a volunteer for a pro-unity group who had been to Afghanistan before. Which is screwed up. source
  • » Hey, over-the-top Mosque haters, read this. The cabbie, Ahmed Sharif, had this to say about the whole “Ground Zero Mosque” thing, which has been blown out of proportion at this point: “I feel very sad. I have been here more than 25 years. I have been driving a taxi more than 15 years. All my four kids were born here. I never [felt] this hopeless and insecure before.” He plans to also hold a news conference today and talk with Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Can we just emphasize how insane it is that a cabbie reportedly got attacked for his religion?
