World: David Cameron: “State multiculturalism” has failed

  • Frankly, we need a lot less of the passive tolerance of recent years and much more active, muscular liberalism.
  • British Prime Minister David Cameron • Offering up this sentiment on tolerance and multiculturalism, suggesting that the United Kingdom needs a stronger sense of unified cultural identity to prevent religious radicalism. He continued: “Let’s properly judge these organisations: Do they believe in universal human rights – including for women and people of other faiths? Do they believe in equality of all before the law? Do they believe in democracy and the right of people to elect their own government? Do they encourage integration or separatism? These are the sorts of questions we need to ask. Fail these tests and the presumption should be not to engage with organisations.” As you might guess, these statements appeared to be targeted towards Muslims, and as a result, this isn’t a particularly popular stance with some. source

Politics: Obama’s own grandmother offers up “Obama’s a Muslim” ammo

  • birthers The president’s biggest doubters believe Obama is a Muslim for some reason, and that he wasn’t born in the U.S. despite the fact that he has a birth certificate. (La la la, they can’t hear you!)
  • grandma The president’s own grandmother, 88-year-old Sarah Omar of Kenya, wants him to convert to Islam: “I prayed for my grandson Barack to convert to Islam,” she said. That should freak birthers out. source

Culture: Point to “Pictures of Muslims Wearing Things” in NPR spat

Aziz Ansari: Born Muslim. He wears clothes, but not the kind that raised Juan Williams’ eyebrows. He’s not alone, as the “Pictures of Muslims Wearing Things” Tumblr proves. source

Politics: NPR’s firing of Juan Williams pretty much a huge mess

  • It’s not a bigoted statement. I said what I meant to say, that it’s an honest experience. … I have a moment of anxiety, of fear, given what happened on 9/11.
  • NPR news analyst Juan Williams • Defending his comments on Muslims that got him fired from NPR. He made this comment on Fox News today – and he made his earlier comment (that “people who are in Muslim garb” at the airport make him “nervous”) on “The O’Reilly Factor.” NPR has been getting some harsh rebukes from the right about all this, and we’re going to say, they’re deserved to some degree. It’s obvious what he meant – he still has some lingering post-9/11 fears, even if they’re a bit misguided – and we don’t think they were anywhere near as bad as the comments Rick Sanchez made that got him fired. Sure, they were questionable, but how many people share Williams’ opinion on this? If anything, he’s reflecting a view that isn’t uncommon (as proven by the whole “Ground Zero Mosque” drama), even if it is straight-up racial profiling. source

Politics: Poll: Muslims like Obama more than anybody else

  • 78% of Muslims give Obama high approval
  • 63% of atheists and agnostics do the same
  • 24% of Mormons think he’s the bee’s knees source
  • » Most Christians are mixed: As Christian-based religions go, Mormons aren’t alone in their dislike of Obama; just half of Catholics approved of him and 43 percent of Protestants did. Jews were another group that greatly approved of Obama, with 61 percent giving him love. Other non-Christian religions largely approved of him too. Despite this, it’s worth noting that he’s down in every religious category listed, but none more than Mormons, where he’s fallen by 19 percent.

Offbeat: Indonesian Muslims: You’re praying in the wrong direction

  • It has been decided that actually the mosques are facing Somalia or Kenya, so we are now suggesting people shift the direction slightly to the north-west. There’s no need to knock down mosques, just shift your direction slightly during prayer.
  • Indonesian Ulema Council head Cholil Ridwan • Informing Muslims in the country that they’ve been praying in the wrong direction. Because that’s not alarming or anything. The group, also known as the MUI, says that people’s prayers have not been wasted, and that Allah still heard them. It’s not often that iPhone users have something in common with Muslims, but both have apparently been doing it the wrong way. source
