U.S.: Wes Leonard: A perfect season, a winning basket … then, tragedy.

  • That last shot Wes Leonard made? That was perhaps the greatest moment of a life that ended too soon. The Fennville, Mich. high-school basketball star made the winning basket in a game that led his team to an undefeated season. It was a great moment for a small town, but it was a victory that came with an unspeakable, unbelievable tragedy. Leonard collapsed and died soon after, a victim of cardiac arrest due to an enlarged heart. A gut punch to say the least. Our heart goes out to his family and friends. source

U.S.: Creepbag homophobic stalker dude Andrew Shirvell fired

  • creepy Michigan assistant attorney general Andrew Shirvell famously got infatuated with a gay University of Michigan student and wrote a hate blog about him. He then showed up on Anderson Cooper’s show, and some magic happened.
  • idiotic An investigation showed a few things: Shirvell was doing much of his blogging and harassment while on the job, he sat outside the guy’s home at 1:30 in the morning, and he stalked the guy’s friends around Ann Arbor. So, yeah.
  • fired In reaction to all this information (and let’s not forget the fact that he lied to investigators), Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox fired Shirvell today. Shirvell’s lawyer hilariously blamed “the liberal media” for his client’s firing. source

U.S.: Four Loko banned in Michigan: Get your blackouts somewhere else

  • “Blackout in a Can” is losing the PR battle. So, it appears that Four Loko is about to become persona non grata in convenience stores across Michigan, as the state has banned the drink altogether (along with 55 other alcohol-plus-energy-drink concoctions) in the wake of a sexual assault case involving Four Loko. “Until further research is done by the FDA, they should no longer be on Michigan shelves,” said Michigan Liquor Control Commission Chairwoman Nida Samona. The makers of Four Loko are protesting the decision. (photo via ghostdad) source

  • sad One of millions of people in dire economic straits, Jennifer Cline and her husband lost their jobs in 2007. Then she got two types of skin cancer.
  • uplifting Cline wrote a letter to Obama telling him of her optimism despite her tough situation. Obama responded personally. It was big news.
  • sad Months later, Cline, still in dire straits, is selling the letter for $7,000 to pay for a mortgage and medical bills. Hard knocks suck. source

U.S.: Did they catch him? Serial stabber suspect arrested at airport

  • It makes me feel a lot better, and a lot safer for everyone. Hopefully, it’s him.
  • Barbara Motley-Embry • Regading the reported arrest of a man tied to a series of stabbings mostly in Flint, Michigan. Motley-Embry’s son David Motley was the first victim of the purported serial killer, who also has ties to attacks in Leesburg, Va. and Toledo, Ohio. All but two of the victims in the attacks were black, leading many to believe that there is a strong racial motivation to the case. Here’s hoping they got their man – this guy was reportedly about to board a flight to Israel. source

Politics: Obama’s economic stimulus PR tour not going to be much fun

  • I wish he’d save his money and not come to Western Michigan. They were just swiping a Chinese charge card for it anyway, and my kid’s got to pick up the tab.
  • Holland, Mich. business co-owner Becky DeWind • Throwing up some major criticism of Obama’s stimulus plan, which helped her business, but was fleeting. DeWind’s firm got a $95,000 contract due to the stimulus to clean radioactive waste, but it apparently was the only U.S. contract they got last year. Obama’s polling low at the moment, and although he’s headed to that region tomorrow, he’s unlikely to find many friends. *pat pat* There there, Obama. Just remember that you’re close to Chicago, where your people are. source

About: On vacation: Here’s a postcard we picked up on the way

  • This is the image we found when we did a Google Images search for “Vacation Postcard Grand Rapids.” Even though it’s 100 percent inaccurate (Grand Rapids is in Michigan), we’re gonna run with it. We’re taking the next four days off. Back Monday night. In case you miss us guys a little much, check out our newest AOL News article about Queen Elizabeth’s money problems. Which also has nothing to do with Oklahoma. source

Politics: No, really? Michigan governor: We have to diversify our economy

  • The world has changed and we have to change with it. There’s still hope for change, but we have to create our own way forward and not wait for change to come to us.
  • Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm • Saying the most mind-numbingly obvious thing we’ve ever published. Ever. With a state that has as high of unemployment as hers and a main industry struggling as much as the auto industry, the time to act is not now. The time to act was 20 years ago, when Michael Moore was making “Roger and Me.” We’re from Michigan, so we have even less sympathy for statements like this. No talk. Just make it happen. And don’t pretend that you haven’t had your opportunities. source
