Politics: New Jersey’s controversial “Snooki subsidy” gets vetoed

  • Chris Christie was expected to sign this bill. But Christie, facing sudden political pressure to run for president, let the $420,000 in tax credits for another season of “Jersey Shore” feel the pain of the veto. Why? “I have no interest in policing the content of such projects,” Christie said in a news release. “However, as chief executive I am duty-bound to ensure that taxpayers are not footing a $420,000 bill for a project which does nothing more than perpetuate misconceptions about the state and its citizens.” This is a reversal for Christie — he previously claimed he couldn’t veto the bill because, while he didn’t like the show himself, the program didn’t discriminate based on content. Culture: Trashy reality star update: Tila Tequila attacked by Juggalo mob

  • yes Tequila was performing at a Juggalo festival in Illinois when she was attacked by the crowd. She suffered cuts in the insane incident. We want a Faygo all of a sudden.
  • no Snooki can’t trademark her name. Why? See, the creators of the kids’ book “Adventures of Snooky” grabbed the name for a cartoon cat way back in 2004.

Culture: Not music, just television: MTV symbolically changes its logo

  • What does MTV stand for now? Heaven forfend, but should ‘Jersey Shore’ prove to be so successful that it keeps the network alive for another three decades, will ‘MTV’ only make sense to those of us who know that it used to stand for ‘Music Television’?
  • TV Squad blogger Annie Wu • On perhaps the most painfully obvious change to MTV’s logo. It no longer refers to itself as “Music Television.” This move honestly has been due since about 2000 or so, really, but now it symbolically cements in stone that MTV can no longer go home. Rather than be depressed about it, we’re just going to watch some music videos on YouTube. At least somebody gives us what we want. source

Culture: “Jersey Shore” gets a Super Mario makeover, gets a lot better

  • As you might know, we have an instant affinity for all things Super Mario. And this is no exception, as Jersey Shore needed a little Mushroom Kingdom action going on – because they have so much in common, including the broad Italian stereotypes. We love the fact, in particular, that Donkey Kong and Bowser are hooking up. Amazing.

Culture: “Jersey Shore” makeover: Michael Cera makes a pretty good guido

  • The Task: Turn Michael Cera – Canada’s greatest nerd export – into a Guido. The solution: Loads of hair gel, lots of bronzing, and the cast of “Jersey Shore.” The result: The greatest thing Michael Cera’s done since “Arrested Development.” Yeah, we called it.
