Music: Today would have been Les Paul’s 96th birthday

  • Happy electric guitar day, everyone! Les Paul, the musical legend centrally responsible for developing the electric guitar, as well as a range of musical innovations (he also pioneered multi-track recording), was born today in 1915. Paul led a long and industrious life; and still regularly performed into his 90s, ultimately passing away in 2009 from pneumonia complications. In honor of Paul’s birthday, Google has a pretty cool logo variant up that lets you strum some guitar chords, definitely worth a look if you have a few idle moments. A tidbit about the man’s commitment: he shattered his right arm in a car crash, and had the doctors pin his elbow at a 90-degree angle so he could continue to play, even though he’d lost all movement at his elbow. source

Tech: TechCrunch relives the early Twttr days with an old-school logo

  • There has to be a good story behind this decision. TechCrunch redid its logo today, but they redid it to look exactly like Twitter’s original logo, launched way back in 2006. Arrington posted an article noting how he was sort of wrong about how Twitter’s success would play out, and it’s a bit hilarious to see how off-base some of the commenters were. Blast from the past, indeed. source

Culture: Not music, just television: MTV symbolically changes its logo

  • What does MTV stand for now? Heaven forfend, but should ‘Jersey Shore’ prove to be so successful that it keeps the network alive for another three decades, will ‘MTV’ only make sense to those of us who know that it used to stand for ‘Music Television’?
  • TV Squad blogger Annie Wu • On perhaps the most painfully obvious change to MTV’s logo. It no longer refers to itself as “Music Television.” This move honestly has been due since about 2000 or so, really, but now it symbolically cements in stone that MTV can no longer go home. Rather than be depressed about it, we’re just going to watch some music videos on YouTube. At least somebody gives us what we want. source

Culture: Can you tell me how to search, how to search for “Sesame Street”?

sesamestreet1104
  • Yes yes, we know. Google’s done this hundreds of times in the past. But, for the 40th anniversary of “Sesame Street,” this is easily the most awesome one they’ve ever done. Even better? They’ve customized them based on which character was most popular in the corresponding country. Good show, Google. source

Tech: Daily poll: Google’s constant logo changes, clever or annoying?

  • Today, Google changed their logo to a barcode to celebrate the anniversary of the first barcode patent. (It turns 57 today.) Now, we think it’s cool and awesome and everything, but Google has been doing this a lot lately. Which compels us to ask a fairly obvious question: Are they overdoing it? Vote above. source

Tech: Comparing apples to apples: Woolworths vs. … um, Apple

A row of apples
  • Woolworths apple Looks like a worm has already gotten to it, based on its loopy shape. It’s got a firm kind of plastic, which tells you that the apple is genetically modified. Is the subject of a scary lawsuit from the Apple on the right.
  • Bad apple Brown, a little shady on the inside. Makes you want to not eat it. We wanted to get a nice apple, but we were in a hurry this morning so we grabbed the very first apple off the tree we could find. Good enough for our purposes.
  • Apple logoNot very organic. Made of chrome. Probably tough to bite into. Probably a few transistors in there somewhere. Was sued heavily by a much more musical Apple back in the day, and is now paying it forward. Good job. source

Offbeat, U.S.: Anarchy: You know it’s ironic when a hipster says it’s ironic

  • I think it’s a strange choice for them … Irony is an overused word, but that’s somewhat ironic in this case.
  • Warwick Seay a.k.a. Warlock • Owner of the Circle-A Café in Milwakee’s uber-hip Riverwest neighborhood (where, strangely enough, we used to live) describing Wisconsin’s new logo for the Government Accountability Board, which looks a lot like the anarchy logo. So, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (Disclosure: We used to work there back in the day) went out to find some hipsters to ask about this, and got this choice quote. • source

Tech: In case you’re looking to make enemies, go to MySpace

See anything missing from the MySpace logo? Like, perhaps, a suggestion that you might find friends here? Hmmmmmm. source
