World: Iran president Ahmadinejad: You can’t mess up my supreme friendship

  • Your efforts will bear no fruit. This road is closed for those devils who dream about harming our relationship. Their dream will be buried along with them.
  • Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad • Regarding his relationship with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which has gotten slightly strained lately due to Ahmadinejad’s delay in following Khamenei’s orders to fire vice president Esfandiar Rahim-Mashaei for being sympathetic to Israel. Ahmadinejad says that critics won’t change their relationship. Someone’s getting a little defensive, eh? • source

World: Ahmadinejad sure took his sweet time removing his buddy from office

  • The Iranian nation didn’t expect the ink on the leader’s letter to dry out while it was not yet implemented.
  • Maj. Gen. Seyed Hassan • Chairman of Iran’s joint chiefs of staff, regarding Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s slow timing regarding booting out his vice president, Esfandiar Rahim Mashai. Ahmadinejad was ordered to remove Mashai from office by Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, due to comments he made that were seen as sympathetic towards Israel. • source

World: Iran’s vice president, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei, resigns amid criticism

  • He apparently wasn’t hard-line enough for leadership. Just days after getting into office, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei has decided to step down from his post. Mashaei, a top aide to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, found himself under a lot of political pressure due to his moderate stance on Israel. When Ahmadinejad named him as his vice president, the furor could be heard from miles away. Now we could be wrong about this – and let us know if we are – but is someone who isn’t hard-line enough really the problem that Iran has right now? (Oh, FYI, expect more protests this week.) source

World: Iran’s Rafsanjani on the election: “All of us have suffered”

  • We could have taken our best step in the history of the Islamic revolution had the election not faced problems. We are in doubt today. Today, we are living bitter conditions due to what happened after the announcement of the election result. All of us have suffered. We need unity more than anytime else.
  • Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani • Describing the political climate around Iran in the wake of the election during a prayer service today. Rafsanjani, a Mousavi supporter and former Iranian president himself, also said protesters in prison should be freed: “We should not keep so many people in prison,” he said. “We should free them to take care of their families.” • source

World: Journalist Iason Athanasiadis describes being held captive in Iran

  • There were people sitting in rows on the floor; … there were others being interrogated at little desks in the corridor because the interrogation rooms were full. I heard questions and shouts coming from the interrogation rooms and the occasional slap.
  • Iason Athanasiadis • Talking about the Iranian jail in the midst of a pretty scary response to election protests. Athanasiadis, a British-Greek journalist who speaks Farsi, was held in Tehran’s Evin prison for 18 days along with many jailed protesters. He’s a freelance reporter who often writes for the Washington Times. • source

World: Now necessary to protest in Iran: Surgical masks

  • They need them to protect their identity. As the latest protests in the country blaze on, we remind everyone that it’s not a fun time to be a member of the opposition in Iran. They’re facing a harsh response from the government, but now have to go out of their way to hide their identity during those protests (which still number in the hundreds). Very sad. By the way, it’s been nearly a month since the contested election. They’re still fighting. Good for them. source
