Biz, Tech: Apple’s 3Q earnings report overloaded with (mostly) good news

  • 91% increase in iPhone sales from a year ago (wow)
  • $20
    billion     Apple’s quarterly revenues, which happens to be a new record for them, by the way
  • $4
    billion     Apple’s quarterly profits, which is also a record for them – and up 70 percent (!); freaking show-offs
  • +28% increase in Mac sales year-over-year; not bad considering their light recent publicity
  • +28% increase in iPad sales from last quarter; pretty good but not particularly spectacular
  • -11% decline in year-over-year iPod sales, which admittedly was kind of expected source
  • » Investors somehow not impressed: Wait, what? Well, here’s why: They expected the increase in Apple’s iPad sales to be much higher, so as a result, Apple’s stock went down five percent in after-hours trading. You bastards can’t ever be impressed, can you?

Tech: Do Apple’s iPhone 4 design flaws extend to the glass?

  • So yeah, another iPhone mini-crisis: So, these cases are designed to protect your iPhone from the elements, but they may actually have the opposite effect. Why? Well, if through normal use, something gets under the case, as has been known to happen, it could cause scratches to the case. Bad enough, but factor in the iPhone 4’s glass back, and you have possible breakage. They reportedly had to take a bunch of cases out of the Apple Store as a preemptive measure. Jesus, can Apple get a break here? source

Tech: Android making dramatic inroads in smartphone share

  • 3.9% Android’s worldwide market share at the end of 2009
  • 17.7% Android’s projected market share by late 2010 source
  • » And it gets better: Slowly but surely, Android is gunning for the 900-pound gorilla in the market, RIM. In the most recent quarter, Android had sold 27 percent of all smartphones in the past six months, topping iPhone’s 23 percent share and closing in on BlackBerry’s 33 percent share. Of course, as nobody ever notes in any of these articles – ever – Google offers up their OS for free and sells it on a variety of models sold by numerous companies. To compare, Apple sells two iPhone models for high margins. Of course Google’s going to own the market.

Tech: Apple’s iPod Touch press photos are a Photoshop fail

  • Just when you thought Apple survived a product launch mostly unscathed, some jerk had to notice some crappy Photoshop work. Apple wasn’t particularly good at hiding their iPhone tracks on the new iPod Touch this time out, leading to a couple gaffes like the one over to the right. See the arrow? Tech: To those still stuck with the iPhone 3G: iOS 4.1 helps (a little)

  • Oh, the lowly iPhone 3G users. Many didn’t upgrade their phones to iOS4, or immediately regretted it, because the new version of the OS was such a dog as to render the phones unusable. Fortunately for those users, the upcoming iOS 4.1 update will help fix that problem, making the phone at least somewhat usable. Don’t expect any miracles, though: The iPhone 3G only has a quarter of the RAM of the iPhone 4 and half the RAM of the iPhone 3GS. And it also has a dog-slow processor, to boot. (We’re still rockin’ iPhone 3.0 on the 3G, just an FYI.) source
