Biz, Tech: Steve Jobs could pump Apple’s stock up by returning early

  • Dude’s been recovering from illness. WWDC is Monday. Hmm. Steve Jobs, who sent shockwaves through the industry by taking medical leave in January, could find himself in a position of boosting his own stock if, as reported this week, he appears at the Worldwide Developer Conference on Monday rather than returning at the end of June. A new iPhone launch is expected, and possibly more. We’re excited already. :D source

Offbeat, Tech: University in Tokyo: We’ll give you an iPhone, but there’s a catch

  • Your GPS will catch you if you’re skipping class. It’s borderline brilliant and borderline evil, but Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo will give students of its School of Social Informatics for both classes and truancy reasons. As the university is one of the most prestigious in the country, attendance is very important, and now they have a better way to check it on those 550 students than notes from doctors or forged notes from classmates. There’s one loophole – a student could have their buddy bring their iPhone to class – but it’s unlikely because iPhones aren’t cheap. source

Tech: Again, MS is late to the game with its new Zune. Here’s why.

  • Why would we want to listen to HD radio when we can stream stuff from the Internet? source
  • It refers to itself as having a HD display, but that display is smaller than the iPhone. *hmm* source
  • Just because a music player can connect to a video game system doesn’t mean it should. source
  • It supposedly has a Web browser, but if its name is “Internet Explorer,” no way Jose. source
  • Lauren probably wouldn’t want one because it’s trying too hard to be really hip. source

Tech: The latest iPhone app news we got to offer to the masses

  • Apple’s policy of rejecting apps based on some minor content flaw continues, this time with an eBook reader featuring a book on Kama Sutra.
  • Finally, have you tried out the USA Today iPhone app? It’s freaking amazing. It’s easily the high standard as far as newspaper apps go. It freaking rules, kids.

Tech: A bunch of Palm Pre fanbois just wet themselves

  • It’s coming. June 6. $300 (plus $100 mail-in rebate). To everyone who thought the Palm Pre would never see the light of day in the overtly public way which it deserves, next month proves to be Pre judgment day. Getting a release just a couple of days before the third-generation iPhone announcement, they can either steal Apple’s thunder entirely or look like an also-ran in the market. Either way, Bono wins. source

Tech: What could possibly be offensive about this Jesus iPhone app?

  • Apple turned down Me So Holy, which allows you to take any photo in your library and put an iconic religious figure’s frame around it. Catholics (and 2 Live Crew) must be up in arms.source

Tech: T-Mobile: We’ll support your iPhone even if we don’t sell it

  • All in all, this cements my loyalty to T-Mobile. Even without officially supporting a particular phone, they are willing to make accommodations to ensure the iPhone users on their network continue to enjoy good service.
  • Consumerist reader “John” • On his positive experience with the wireless provider after his unlocked, jailbroken iPhone went wonky due to a problem on T-Mobile’s end. The company offered service credits to affected customers and a rep even went so far as to post on Apple hacking forum about the problem. Well, that’s just awesome. • source

Tech: Blackberry’s Curve > iPhone 3G? How did that happen?

  • Blame it on more carriers and better deals. RIM is glowing in the fact that its Curve, still a well-received phone even without the press of the iPhone, managed to beat the iPhone in 1st quarter sales. Part of it was Verizon, who offered help in the form of a buy-one-get-one-free sale for Blackberries. So, not only is the Curve at the top of the handheld market, but two other Blackberry phones grace the top five. Not a bad racket. source

Music, Tech: Trent Reznor’s NIN app got rejected. The reason? His music.

  • “The Downward Spiral” was cited as the specific reason for rejection. The latest version of Trent Reznor’s iPhone app, “NIN Access,” was blocked from the App Store for its content. Which is strange because the content is largely the same as the original version of the app. When Reznor heard the reason, he responded (via Tweet), “Not even sure where to start with that one.” The iPhone App Store’s rejection process has long been criticized for this specific reason. source

Tech: Verizon’s apparently getting OMG OMG new Apple porn O_O

  • An iPhone “Nano”? Verizon may not merely be getting an iPhone, as previously noted. Instead, they might be getting two variants of the iPhone, one of which would be a smaller, cheaper, less functional iPhone – kinda like the iPod Nano. source

  • A tablet iPhone? The other model Verizon might get would have similar functionality to the iPod Touch, but would be closer to Kindle-sized, though with a larger screen. Let’s hope this isn’t a rumor because it sounds awesome. source
