World: Because we apparently like scaring you, here’s a scary swine flu quote

  • H1N1 epidemic, pandemic as it is now, is unstoppable, and therefore all countries will need to have access to vaccine.
  • Marie-Paule Kieny • The director of vaccine research with the WHO, on the spread of the disease, which has killed 500 worldwide and sickened 1 million. Another scary note: Vaccine production yields have been poor, so supply isn’t as great as it should be. Another report notes that if Tamiflu becomes ineffective against the disease, things could get really scary: “Collectively, our findings are a reminder that (strains of swine flu) have not yet garnered a place in history, but may still do so.” • source

World: Kim Jong Il and Steve Jobs have something in common

  • North Korea’s lead dude has pancreatic cancer. Well, that explains a lot. The recent decline in public appearances by the North Korean leader, along with the heavy amount of ballsy provocations by the country, has hinted that something might be up with his health. And a report by Yonhap Television News confirms it. So, yeah, time to start thinking about that line of succession. source

Offbeat: Fewer calories means longer life, fewer Frappuccinos

  • They tested it on primates. Seriously. Admit it, you like eating. And not just anything. Absolute garbage. Drinks with more calories than many meals. Burgers loaded with layer upon layer of meat, cheese, secret sauce … you get the idea. Well, if you want to live longer, maybe you shouldn’t. According to a study that involved cutting calories of monkeys, they found just 13% of monkeys who had their calorie intake limited died during the 20-year testing period, versus 37% of monkeys who chose to gorge as much as they wanted. So, next time … get the small Frappuccino, and thank us later. source

Biz, U.S.: Could NyQuil go off the shelves? The FDA’s debating it

Blame a bunch of idiots who OD on acetaminophen. The agent, a key ingredient in Tylenol, causes people to overdose if taken in too high of doses – but those doses aren't far from the labels' recommended doses. Using numbers from a study published in the 1990s, the FDA is trying to ban drugs that mix acetaminophen with other drugs. Like half the cold remedies out there. source

Biz, Tech: Warren Buffett thinks Steve Jobs shoulda said he was having surgery

  • If I have any serious illness, or something coming up of an important nature, an operation or anything like that, I think the thing to do is just tell – the Berkshire shareholders about it. I work for them.
  • Warren Buffett • On what he would’ve done if he was having the kind of surgery Steve Jobs did. Jobs needed a liver transplant and got one back in April. But the world didn’t know about it until just the other day. Not that Apple particularly missed him: Their stock is up 60% this year, most of which he’s been out on medical leave. • source

World: This story from Japan will transplant your heartstrings. :(

  • 11-year-old Hiroki Ando needs a new heart. The old ticker isn’t working very well. He suffers from the inflammatory heart disease cardiomyopathy, which killed his sister five years ago. source
  • However, Ando cannot get a new heart in Japan, where it’s illegal for anyone under the age of 15 to donate organs. People donated $1.7 million, and he’s headed to the U.S. for help. source
  • It’s a major issue in Japan – the public perception of organ transplants has limited them to the point where just 81 have happened since 1997. Thousands happen yearly in the U.S. source
