U.S.: Admit it, you’re curious about this Bobby Jindal guy

  • We were too, which is why we read Esquire. Louisiana Gov. Jindal seemed to come out of nowhere this week to become the Figure Sarah Palin Should Have Been for the Republicans, with his response to Barack Obama’s speech cementing his face in the American consciousness. If you’re wondering who this dude is, check out this Esquire article from October, which goes into detail about the things that shaped his personality and beliefs. The religious stuff admittedly weirded us out, tho. source

U.S.: Key point of Bobby Jindal’s GOP response

  • But the way to lead is not to raise taxes and put more money and power in hands of Washington politicians. The way to lead is by empowering you – the American people. Because we believe that Americans can do anything.
  • Bobby Jindal • Who took Barack Obama — and Democrats — to task for passing a massive stimulus bill. Jindal emphasized fiscal responsibility in his speech. • source

  • He will always be held in high regard by the people for making this decision. The common good is really what we have to focus on today.
  • Gov. Patrick Quinn • regarding a potential resignation by Illinois senator Roland Burris, who’s been a pretty entertaining dramabomb unto himself lately. • source

U.S.: Which state economy is doing the worst? Easy. California.

  • Many, many problems California can’t get a state budget passed, they have a deficit of $41 billion, their governor is a former actor who doesn’t have any support in the state legislature, they’re laying off a bunch of people, and they have the worst credit of any state in the nation. Should we go on, guys? source

  • The budget crisis The California state legislature has been going at their budget for days, attempting to get a bill onto to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s desk. They keep getting distracted – today, they randomly honored Hudson Bay hero pilot Chesley Sullenberger. Um, can’t Sully wait for a couple days? source

  • And one jerk … … is trying to attach a bunch of unrelated junk to the budget bill, which is making things even more complicated than they already are. Republican State Senator Abel Maldonado is pushing for an open primary system, which Democrats don’t like. Dude, your economy’s about to implode! source

U.S.: No budget in California? Bye-bye government jobs.

  • In the absence of a budget, the governor has a responsibility to realize state savings any way he can. This is unfortunately a necessary decision.
  • Aaron McLear • A spokesman for California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who had the delightful joy of informing the press that 20,000 jobs may be getting cut. The drastic measure is due to the fact that California’s $40 billion budget didn’t pass by a narrow margin this weekend. • source

U.S.: Just when you thought the Burris/Blagojevich story had died …

  • … here it comes, blazing back for another round! Rep. Roland Burris’ aides claim today that former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s brother had approached the former Illinois Attorney General about raising campaign money for the governor. Burris didn’t, he still got appointed to the senate anyway, and Rod got the boot. Of course, this does leave the matter of why Burris didn’t mention this a few weeks ago … source

U.S.: Ex-eBay CEO plans California governor run, auctioning of seat

  • California faces challenges unlike any other time in its history – a weak and faltering economy, massive job losses, and an exploding state budget deficit. I refuse to stand by and watch it fail.
  • Meg Whitman • One of Silicon Valley’s most prominent conservatives. Whitman plans to run for governor of California in 2010. On a side note, how weird would it be to go from the Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to someone who made her money auctioning off Beanie Babies? • source
