Biz, Tech: Google and Facebook are in a bare-knuckles fight to own the Web

  • In one ultra-organized corner … Google Google’s been on top of the heap for nearly a decade, and it’s a firm hold. They’ve built themselves around the idea that the Web’s organization should be simple. Their ads are well-targeted, and their services – especially search, Gmail and News – are incredibly useful. They made $4.2 billion last year alone.
However, they have one big problem: They can’t convince the brands of Madison Ave. to work with them.

  • And in a more social one … Facebook Facebook, on the other hand, is building influence and currency on the Web. They’ve got critical mass, and, smartly, didn’t even focus on competing with MySpace. They want to be the new Google, and have just the right arrogant CEO to pull it off. Their hyper-focused information means they can focus on advertising for brands.
However, they have one big problem: They keep pissing off their customers by evolving too quickly. source

Tech, World: Unable to block porn from computers, China turns to Google

  • Google has been asked by China to block a feature that brings up related search terms when typing in a word, because apparently it was showing too much explicit related content. source
  • China has been ratcheting up its internet censorship lately, much to the chagrin of users. On top of Tiananmen Square blocking, they tried (and failed) to put censoring software on all PCs. source

Politics, Tech: You’re lying to yourself if you think you’ll make money blogging

  • Google ads pay almost nothing. Banner ads are worth almost nothing, and the market for advertising has cratered with the Great Recession.
  • Blogger Jake Seliger • Who combined the main points of two articles we recently posted about to make the argument that we’ll never make money blogging. But it doesn’t mean we won’t keep trying. Because we’re crazy and apparently aren’t sure how to stop. • source

Tech: Google SEEMS calm about MS’ Bing, but are they really freaking out?

  • The New York Post sez yes. The Post, in their usual overwrought style, claimed that Google was so surprised that Bing was actually good that co-founder Sergey Brin is actually taking a desperate hands-on approach to making improvements to the engine. Yeah. Sure. source

  • But is it just marketing? Despite Bing’s solid search, really, it may just have killer marketing. Larry Dignan of ZDNet argues that Google is just search when sites like Bing and Wolfram|Alpha are actively offering more than that. A new branding approach may be key for Google. source

Politics, Tech: Google: You mean the DOJ is investigating us? Pssh, whatever!

  • They wouldn’t be doing their job if they weren’t taking a look at all the industries people are telling them to take a look at.
  • Dana Wagner • Google’s competition counsel, on the Obama administration’s investigation of the search engine giant. To explain how much the government’s all over Google, we’re going to pretend to be like The Count here. One government inquiries. Ah-TWO government inquiries. NO! THREE government inquiries! • source

Biz, Tech: Google’s CEO sez Microsoft is just making noise with Bing

  • It’s not the first entry for Microsoft. They do this about once a year. I don’t think Bing’s arrival has changed what we’re doing. We are about search, we’re about making things enormously successful, by virtue of innovation.
  • Google CEO Eric Schmidt • Who says that, despite Bing’s early popularity, they’re not a threat and will “evolve to a different strategy” that won’t affect Google. In other words, MS is rattling their cage again and not really hurting anyone. • source

Tech: Wow. CNet says Microsoft’s Bing search engine tops Google

  • Google keeps improving in the area of in-search collation and display as well, but Bing makes Google look complacent, and that’s not good for Google. For the moment, Bing’s on top in this game.
  • CNet reviewer Rafe Needleman • On Microsoft’s Bing, the funnily-named new search engine designed to compete with Google big time. Needleman says Bing doesn’t consistently top Google, but it does it enough to make it look competitive. That’s OK, though; Google should be fine. Heck, MS totally got upstaged by Google today. But that said, Bing launches fully on June 3 keep an eye out. • source

Biz, Tech: Google considered buying newspapers – but not anymore.

  • Google, with their charitable arm, Google.org, was once interested in buying a paper that wanted to carry non-profit status. They were also offered a stake in The New York Times. source
  • CEO Eric Schmidt said that the company ultimately decided that the debt load was too high and that they didn’t want to be on the other side of the news-aggregation plate. Good move. source
