Tech: Did Apple just tell Microsoft they wanna make Bing? WTF?

  • Apparently, they did, according to sources. The desktop rivals may be ready to share the same phone after Google overstayed its welcome on the iPhone last year. Apple’s considering making Bing the default search engine, as well as making it an option on Safari. This would show exactly how far the business relationship has fallen in the wake of the Google Voice app fiasco, the Nexus One, Android, etc. Can you imagine using Bing on the iPhone? The more interesting note, though? Apparently Apple’s thinking of creating its own search to compete with Google. Whoa. source

Tech, U.S., World: The U.S. takes Google’s claims on China super-seriously

  • They’re treating it as a foreign policy issue, not a business issue. Next week, in response to Google’s claims of a cyber-attack by China, the U.S. plans to submit a formal protest, according to the State Department. Among other things to note about the story: Google briefed the U.S. before posting its lengthy note (to no objections), and China has had a number of little annoyances like this from the U.S. of late. We just enjoy ticking the Chinese off with our talk of “free speech,” apparently. source

  • The Chinese government administers the Internet according to law and we have explicit stipulations over what content can be spread on the Internet.
  • Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu • In a general comment on Internet censorship clearly targeting Google’s bold push to stop censorship on the Internet in China. Another Chinese official, Wang Chen, director of the State Council Information Office, had this to say about the matter: “Effective guidance of public opinion on the Internet is an important way of protecting the security of online information.” Doesn’t sound like China’s willing to bend. source

Well, their support mechanism is designed to be an e-mail based process that takes a couple of days to answer, but people with $529 phones want a lot more than that. As a result, forums are flooded with people complaining about problems with the phone. The lesson for Google? A live person is more useful than an e-mail. Sometimes. Especially with hardware. source

  • china The country, known for limiting free speech as well as economic power, was apparently behind a large cyber-attack that hit Google and many other companies, and tried to access sensitive information about human rights activists.

  • We feel this is a clear infringement of our intellectual-property rights. … Our legal team is dealing head-on with this.
  • Isa Dick Hackett • Daughter of Phillip K. Dick, on Google’s usage of the name “Nexus One” for their phone. The author used “Nexus-6” androids in his book 1968 “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?,” which was the basis of 1982’s Harrison Ford cult film “Blade Runner.” Did they reference it? Probably. Does the Dick family have a case? No. And that’s why Joss Whedon isn’t suing Google over “Google Wave,” even though they clearly took inspiration from “Firefly.” Enjoy the exposure, Dicks. source
