U.S., World: Iraq’s got it: The U.S. isn’t being asked for help in urban fighting

  • There are established protocols for how (Iraqi forces) might ask for that, but we have not been asked for combat forces.
  • Lieutenant-General Charles Jacoby Jr. • The man in charge of day-to-day operations in Iraq. Jacoby notes that while they’ve given plenty of pre-combat and post-combat support, Iraq has not asked for any help when it comes to the recent increase in insurgency in cities over the last few weeks. The numbers are still far down from their 2006-2007 peak. • source

Politics, World: That crazy diplomat, John Bolton, just had another crazy idea

  • With Iran’s hard-line mullahs and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps unmistakably back in control, Israel’s decision of whether to use military force against Tehran’s nuclear weapons program is more urgent than ever.
  • John R. Bolton • Suggesting, in a column in the Washington Post, that Israel should go to war with Iran. Uh, dude? Doesn’t Iran – and heck, Israel – have enough problems without creating another war in this war-torn region of the world? • source

World: The current state of Tehran: Unease between military, protesters

  • After a long Saturday, things have (temporarily) quieted. On Saturday, we learned two things about the nature of the Iran protests: One, the government is no longer willing to accept peaceful dissent; and two, protesters are willing to risk their lives in the fight for the rights of the country’s people. Today, things have calmed down, but are expected to heat up again later in the day. Even if the protests calmed down after today, deep political wounds are now out in the open – something the Iranian government will struggle with easing. source

World: Iranian protesters need to fear tear gas and prosecution now

  • Those who pull people to the streets should know that by a judicial decree they will be prosecuted by law and they will be arrested.
  • Ahmadreza Radan • Iran’s deputy national police commander, on how the game had changed now that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has told the protesters to get off the street. Tear gas. Fear of arrest. Water cannons. General lameness. Remember guys, human rights are a hard-fought-for resource. • source

U.S., World: North Korea starts firing off more crazy stuff

  • The test-range missile is the sixth this week. You got to hand it to North Korea. When they want to get your attention, they’re willing to go all out. Despite much complaining by the international community, the country continues to blow stuff up. South Korea’s ready for war. Yesterday, the U.S. decided to put the country on its second-highest alert level. Can we just be optimistic and believe they’re just trying to kill off their supplies? source
