Offbeat: Protip: Google’s walking directions could get you hit by a car

  • Park City, Utah resident Lauren Rosenberg is an idiot. Rosenberg was trying to walk from one side of town to the other and ended up on a highway without a sidewalk. She kept following Google’s instructions on her BlackBerry and (surprise) got hit by a car. Now she’s suing for $100,000. OK, we understand that Google’s walking directions may perhaps be a little off sometimes, but when does common sense step in? (Groan.) source

Politics, Tech: Congress way ahead of Obama when it comes to iPad love

  • Guess which congressman said this: “This thing is the bomb. It’s light; it’s portable. It’s accessible information. I love it.” The Blackberry was perhaps the killer device for legislatiors of the last decade, but this decade it’s proving to be the iPad. With laptops still not allowed on the floor, the aluminum and glass love machine is a major hit for some. If it takes off, it could straight-up replace the need for paper in the famously-tree-killing legislative branch. We haven’t heard if Robert Byrd is using one yet, though. Maybe he’s waiting for the second-gen. source

Tech: Android outsells iPhone in the U.S., but BlackBerry outsells them both

  • 33% of smartphone sales are made by BlackBerry maker RIM
  • 28% of smartphone sales are various phones that run on Google’s Android OS
  • 21% of smartphone sales are made by Apple; note the lack of Microsoft source
  • » Red herring?: Before we go gaga over these sales numbers, one thing to keep in mind is that Apple only sells one phone, whereas Research in Motion has a whole lineup of phones and Android is used by numerous companies. Business Insider sees a different (and also probably accurate) conclusion: Apple needs to get their phone on Verizon, like yesterday.

Biz, Tech: RIM’s BlackBerry feeling the pressure from Apple and Google

  • They had this business to themselves for years. Now everybody’s joined the party. The U.S. is probably tough for them now.
  • Charter Equity Research analyst Ed Snyder • On Research in Motion’s declining sales this quarter. The company’s BlackBerry is being attacked on all fronts, by both the iPhone and the upstart Motorola Droid. As a result, the company only shipped 10.5 million devices, half a million off from estimates. They’re still profitable (and profits are up), but the sales suggest future weakness. source
