Politics, U.S.: Obama adviser: Bush a “statesman,” Cheney a jerk

  • [President Bush] has behaved like a statesman. And as I’ve said before, here and elsewhere, I just don’t think the memo got passed down to the vice president.
  • Top Obama adviser David Axelrod • On former President Bush’s relative silence on the Obama administration (Bush said last month that Obama “deserves my silence”), which contrasts with Dick Cheney’s increased public profile. It was like the dude just showed up after not being around for eight years to complain about Obama! • source

U.S., World: North Korea launched their rocket. Obama is ticked. Ticked!

  • With this provocative act, North Korea has ignored its international obligations, rejected unequivocal calls for restraint, and further isolated itself from the community of nations.
  • Barack Obama • In a statement regarding North Korea launching that rocket they’ve been going on and on about because they’re annoying. Well, they launched it on schedule. Sigh. • source

U.S.: Rod Blagojevich on his indictment: “I’m going to Disney World!”

  • It’s a small world after all, but Blago’s still in big trouble. Everyone’s favorite governmental punching bag was apparently taking a vacation from getting in trouble today in Magic Kingdom, but trouble found him anyway. Prosecutors charged him and five others with a host of scary-sounding crimes, including making Barack Obama’s old Illinois Senate seat pay-for-play. Man, this story will just not die, and we’re loving every minute of it. source

U.S., World: FYI: Barack Obama has a thing for queens

  • There’s one last thing I should mention I love about Great Britain and that is the Queen. I’m very much looking forward to meeting her.
  • President Barack Obama • Who’s currently on his first overseas trip to Europe, where he’s currently hobnobbing with the Brits. If you get a chance, dude, go hang with the common people. Do whatever the common people do. • source

Politics: Commentary: April Fool’s Jokes about politics aren’t funny

  • “A conservative lesbian” offers a great example. Cynthia Yockey’s article, titled “Obama confesses to treason and resigns, co-conspirators are in custody, Hillary Clinton sworn in as president,” imagines Obama getting arrested for being everything that bat$&^# insane conservatives say he is. Ms. Yockey, April Fool’s Day jokes are supposed to be funny. Make something up about how they found cheese on the moon. Pull a prank on your boss. But don’t subject people to stuff like this. source

Biz, U.S.: Auto bailout: Why Obama’s finally trading the carrot for the stick

  • We think we can have a successful U.S. auto industry.
But it’s got to be one that’s realistically designed to weather this storm and to emerge — at the other end — much more lean, mean and competitive than it currently is.
  • President Barack Obama • On Face the Nation yesterday morning; the president and his administration feel that the automakers (particularly Chrysler, who seems to have given up hope for anything but a merger) are not doing enough to aggressively restructure their companies in the face of impending doom. • source

U.S.: Repealing “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” not on the top burner right now

  • Defense Secretary Robert Gates says it’s further down the list. Gates says that while he and President Obama have started talking about it, they have “a lot on our plates right now” and are early in the discussion phase. The policy against gays in the military has been in place since 1993 and has long been controversial. source

Politics, U.S.: The Republican who nearly joined Obama’s cabinet has beef

  • In the next five years, President Obama’s budget will double the national debt. In the next 10 years, it will triple the national debt.
  • Sen. Judd Gregg, R-NH • On Barack Obama’s budget plan and how it will saddle future generations with heavy debt. He says Obama’s plans “represent an extraordinary move of our government to the left.” Gregg nearly became commerce secretary but backed off after finding the ideological differences to be too extreme. • source
