World: Good to know: Guards at U.S. bases in Afghanistan have Taliban ties

  • Let’s say that you’re the Pentagon, and you’re fighting a war in Afghanistan. Now let’s say that you have bases for your soldiers. And let’s say that they need guards. Who do you hire? If the answer is private Afghan security firms with little oversight, *ding ding ding* you’ve won a prize. Now, let’s offer up an extra wrinkle for you guys, and this is the one the Senate is getting all caught up on. Apparently, some of these guards have ties to the Taliban, that nebulous enemy that you’ve been fighting for almost a decade. (That’s not even to mention the guards with ties to Iranian intelligence or the ones with criminal ties.) Whaddya do? You get really pissed off, that’s what. source

Music: Whoops: Miami police use Jay-Z caricatures in anti-gang ad

  • Here’s an anti-gang ad the Miami Police Department recently put on their Web site. Hey, that guy in the center sure looks familiar. So does that guy on the left! Wait a second! source

World: Gruesome 10:10 ads, or why Richard Curtis is no Edgar Wright

  • Fun fact: This ad in favor of cutting carbon emissions is written by Richard Curtis. You know, the guy who directed “Love Actually” and “Notting Hill.” And the narrator is none other than Gillian Anderson. Oh yeah, for no stupid reason whatsoever, they gruesomely blow up kids in this video. Because that’s not going to piss off sponsors or anything. Sony’s already dropped out. Yeah, yeah, wry British humor. But come on. source

Politics: So, anti-immigration firebrand Lou Dobbs is a hypocrite

  • hm… Lou Dobbs basically built his career with CNN on his anger over immigration issues.
  • hmm… Dobbs, who dramatically quit his job last year, may be planning an electoral run soon.
  • hmmm…
The Nation found out that he has a bunch of illegal workers on his property. Uh-oh. source

Politics: Feds issue fresh subpoenas in John Edwards sex scandal

  • bad John Edwards has spent the last couple of years attempting to move on after a very public love-child scandal. It hasn’t been so easy for him.
  • worse Federal investigators are still on the case, issuing subpoenas to see if he used campaign funds to pay for Rielle Hunter’s love nest. So yeah, it could get worse. source

Politics: Max Headroom: Bill Gates brings up death panels for no good reason

  • Bad move, Bill GatesTip to anyone, anywhere, anytime: Don’t have a discussion using the phrase “death panels” in reference to health care. Because if you do, you’re going to show up on Glenn Beck’s news site, The Blaze. The size of this particular hornet’s next is freaking huge, dude.
  • judges ≠ scientistsThe legal decision that decided in favor of a family whose child was linked to her autism is gonna give hope to folks like Jenny McCarthy. The truth is, the science doesn’t support it. Neither does the case, which was found under grounds very specific to the situation.
  • Touré tokes up The Rolling Stone writer and MSNBC contributor had a pretty hilarious rant about California’s pot proposition, ending it with this clever one-liner: “The people who are railing the hardest against decriminalization are those who are most in need of a smoke!” Win.

Politics: Amid warnings, Pastor Terry Jones plans to pray really hard

  • But don’t for a second think they plan not to go through with their stupid idea. After hearing criticism from the U.S. military about his congregation’s plan to go through with that whole idiotic “Burn a Koran Day” thing, Jones was on CNN kinda sorta giving lip service to the idea of not doing it. “We have firmly made up our mind, but at the same time, we are definitely praying about it,” he says. He wants to be sure his intentions are clear. You know, that his flock’s Koran burning is meant to be really nice. source

Tech: Did YouTube break its featured videos formula for some reason?

  • Half of the top eight videos are videos that have something to do with a single YouTube celebrity – Shane Dawson. Great if you’re a fan of Shane Dawson, awful if you’re just about anyone else. Why is this? Well, YouTube changed its formula recently, so now it’s not done by hand. This makes no sense. Before, it encouraged the discovery of new videos. Now, we get Shaytards. And Fail Blog. And Shane Dawson. All of which, in our opinion, completely suck and aren’t nearly as good as that random stuff that used to bubble up. In other words, established entities win over actual viral content. Way to not understand your user base, guys. We know you’re owned by Google, YouTube, but get your humans back. source

World: Protip from State Department: Don’t enter North Korea, idiots

  • The state Department timed its new note to just after the end of Jimmy Carter’s visit. In case you’re wondering, you shouldn’t enter North Korea unless you’re Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter. “The North Korean government will prosecute and sentence those who enter the DPRK without proper documentation,” the State Department says. “North Korea’s penalties for knowingly or unknowingly violating North Korean laws are much harsher than are those in the United States for similar offenses.” Carter left the country with Aijalon Mahli Gomes, who was sentenced to eight years of hard labor for entering the country. He entered reportedly for humanitarian reasons. source

U.S.: It’s official: Mr. Candidate Alvin Greene could be Mr. Felony

  • bad Greene’s initial(ly hilarious) candidacy and surprising Democratic primary win was marred by (among other things) an arrest on pornography charges.
  • worseKnee-deep in campaign mode, Greene has been charged for the incident – one felony and one misdemeanor. Porn + Public office = Not a good mix. source
