World: Iranian protesters need to fear tear gas and prosecution now

Biz, U.S.: Everybody’s favorite ponzi schemer, R. Allen Stanford, in custody

  • He surrendered to FBI agents while hanging at hs gf’s place. Stanford, who’s on the hook for $8 billion in freaking fraud, was arrested last night in the case. According to his attorney, Dick DeGuerin, here’s how it went down: “Federal agents in black SUVs surrounded his girlfriend’s house this afternoon, and just sat there. I told him to walk out and introduce himself. So he did, and he asked them, ‘If you’ve got a warrant, take me into custody. If you don’t, I’m going to Houston.’ And they did, so they arrested him.” He’ll be in court today. source

U.S., World: 12 years?! 12 years for the journalists arrested in N. Korea?!

  • This is, simply put, complete bull$&%#. Current TV journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling, who were working on a story about defectors from North Korea when they were arrested, were sentenced to 12 years of “reform through labour.” North Korea’s prisons are notoriously awful and these journalists deserve no less than Roxana Saberi got in terms of protest and support for a fair release. While it’s argued that the jail time is a mere negotiating tactic for a country in need of one, it’s still pretty awful no matter how you shake it. source

U.S.: “Cape Man,” the crazy guy who wanted to kill Obama, arrested

  • Daniel James Murray was arrested … at a casino. First of all, if you’re so worried about the safety of the American economy that you threatened to kill the president, why are you at a casino? But anyway, the man, who bizarrely deposited $85,000 at a Utah bank and then withdrew it a week later while making crazy comments all the while, has been detained by the Secret Service. By the way, the New York Daily News reports that Murray likes wearing capes and talking to himself. source
