Biz, U.S.: Pay-for-play internships: Trust fund kids get to try on dream jobs

  • It’s kind of crazy. The demand for internships in the past 5, 10 years has opened up this huge market. At this point, all we can do is teach students to understand that they’re paying and to ask the right questions.
  • University of Kansas career center director David Gaston • On the high demand for internships, which has created a niche market for services designed to help you (or your parents help you) get that awesome internship you always dreamed of. One organization, the University of Dreams, received 9,000 applications for the services last year alone. We don’t like this; this is very much gaming the system. • source

U.S., World: The next diplomacy frontier: Climate change in unstable regions

  • I’ve been making this argument for a number of years, but it has not been a focus because a lot of people had not connected the dots.
  • Democratic Sen. John Kerry, who chairs the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee • Regarding climate change and the effect it could have on the world’s stability. Some regions, such as sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia – areas which already could be considered among the world’s more unstable – could face rising tides, droughts, food crises and other problems as a result of global warming. Recent war games have suggested this, and the U.S. is considering how it will handle these issues down the road. • source

U.S.: Mark Sanford and Jenny Sanford: No longer under the same roof

  • Jenny (and her sons) moved out Friday. South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford continues to be on the outs with his wife Jenny, with the state’s First Lady moving her stuff out yesterday. She plans to take the kids back to Charleston, where they’ll attend school. Both husband and wife said this was for the best for now but said they planned to continue to work out family problems. Personally, we would have loved to see Mark move out into the doghouse. source

Biz, U.S.: Does Cash for Clunkers destroy classic cars or kill off cruddy ones?

  • It would be a shame to wipe out the rootstock of all the great cars that followed, to see a utopian symbol like the Jeep Grand Wagoneer or a car with the rich personality of an Alfa Romeo 164 get clobbered.
  • Car and Driver editor in chief Eddie Alterman • Discussing some of the cars that could head off the road thanks to Cash for Clunkers, which just got another financial boost from the government. While cars of the era that are getting taken off the streets – vehicles made after 1984 – were made in a period where vehicle quality was in decline (hence the name of the program), some cars were definitely keepers that would stand the test of time. • source
