Tech: Super-nerd Cory Doctorow: The iPad is made of pure evil

  • It really feels like the second coming of the CD-ROM ‘revolution’ in which ‘content’ people proclaimed that they were going to remake media by producing expensive (to make and to buy) products.
  • Boing Boing blogger Cory Doctorow • Discussing why he hates the iPad so much. He notes a number of reasons, but the biggest is that it’s a machine that’s not designed to be tinkered with, and invokes the “Maker’s Manifesto” in his argument: “If you can’t open it, you don’t own it.” Don’t think he speaks for Boing Boing with this argument, by the way. Fellow Boing Boinger Xeni Jardin reviewed the device and gave it the headline, “Apple’s iPad is a touch of genius.” So, if anything, Doctorow (who’s anti-copyright, pro Creative Commons) provides the site some balance. source

Tech: Need proof the iPad is going to be an amazing device? See this

  • This is a drum machine emulator. As many budding musicians will tell you, learning recording techniques on a PC isn’t exactly much fun due to the learning curve involved. You can already see how much less of one a device like the iPad creates. Korg’s iElectribe app suggests just how much possibility is out there. Hopefully, Apple fixes their App Store situation to encourage creativity like this. source

Tech: Sharp’s glasses-free 3D screens get us closer to mobile phone “Avatar”

  • Only downside: You have to be about a foot away. Sharp introduced a cool new technology today, a 3D touchscreen LCD. Why is this a big deal? Because it’s easily usable on mobile phones. It has some downsides – it only works at a fixed distance away. But you can easily switch between 2D and 3D, and you don’t need glasses, which is the important part. source

Tech: RIP Ed Roberts, Altair 8800 maker who started the PC revolution

  • Ed Roberts may not have invented the iPad, but his invention is arguably more important. The Altair 8800 was the first personal computer produced to any sort of scale. Not that it could do much – the only thing you could do on this version was hit switches and make lights blink. But it still sold thousands out of the gate. Roberts died last night. He was 68. source

Tech: Engadget doesn’t know what to do with this JooJoo tablet

  • In terms of dumb tech moves, this ranks up there with Palm releasing the Pre the same week as the latest iPhone revision. The CrunchPad JooJoo hit Engadget’s desk today like a lump of coal, and while they want to review it and stuff, they also kinda hit on one of the busiest tech weeks of the year. Something about a tablet computer backed by a Silicon Valley guy with more cred than Michael Arrington. source

Tech: YouTube’s April Fool’s joke, TextP, really works (and is awesome)

  • Perfect response to this feature: “I like the TEXTp, but could you cut the font size in half? some videos look horrible and you can’t even make out what it is with the current font size. If it were 6 or 8 instead of what looks like 12 then you would still cut down on bandwidth but get more people to switch because they will still get their video.” (Oh, and people are downright angry about the new layout, which has been around for a while in beta form, and are threatening to quit the site where they watch all their videos. Because, as we all know, the most rational people in the world are YouTube commenters.) source

Tech: USA Today: The iPad will be the first popular tablet computer

  • Edward Baig and Jefferson Graham of the newspaper both agree: The iPad is an amazing device. Graham, in the video above, notes some flaws, including the challenge of getting content on the device. But both seemed super-impressed, and in Baig’s case, he suggests that netbook creators may have to redesign their devices to compete: “They’ll have to adapt or disappear — especially since their price advantage compared with the entry-level iPad isn’t as great as some might have thought it would be.” (hat tip TUAW) source

Tech: David Pogue: Techies will hate the iPad, regular people will love it

  • techies It’s just a giant iPod Touch, and
it doesn’t do any of the technical
stuff you’d expect a computer to
do. The keyboard is hard to use.
Oh, and it doesn’t run Flash.
  • non-techies It’s just a giant iPod Touch, but it’s also loaded with possibilities thanks to the new format, and is fairly foolproof. It’s fast and loaded with battery life. Oh, and apps! source

Tech: Walt Mossberg: You have to use the iPad to understand its appeal

The influential Wall Street Journal technology reviewer’s take? It’s a great new type of computing device, but with some downsides that don’t sink it. source

Biz, Tech: RIM’s BlackBerry feeling the pressure from Apple and Google

  • They had this business to themselves for years. Now everybody’s joined the party. The U.S. is probably tough for them now.
  • Charter Equity Research analyst Ed Snyder • On Research in Motion’s declining sales this quarter. The company’s BlackBerry is being attacked on all fronts, by both the iPhone and the upstart Motorola Droid. As a result, the company only shipped 10.5 million devices, half a million off from estimates. They’re still profitable (and profits are up), but the sales suggest future weakness. source
