Tech: Social network Path: Like Facebook on opposite day, apparently

  • one The just-launched social network was launched with help from Napster’s other founder, Shawn Fanning. No Sean Parker in Path’s way.
  • two Rather than allowing you as many friends as you can stand, Path limits you to 50, so that (presumably) you’ll limit it to your best friends.
  • three The site does not allow you to do such things as like or comment on photos, publish to other sites, or search for friends. WTF? source

Tech: Uh-oh: Is Facebook prepping to attack Gmail head-on?

  • issue Over the last week or so, Google and Facebook have been entwined in an argument over Facebook’s importing of Gmail contacts; Google wants them to open up, but Facebook instead has worked around Google’s roadblocks.
  • reason? So why has Facebook been so resistant to Google’s open-up-your-datastream advances? Well, it seems Facebook is about to launch some sort of messaging thing on Monday. Is it e-mail? Because if it is, that would explain a lot. source

Tech: Google/Facebook have lots of money to throw around

  • $3.5 million paid by Google to retain top engineer source
  • » Good engineers are in short supply. At least, that’s what we’re gleaning from the numbers being thrown at them by Google and Facebook. Earlier this year, a Google engineer turned down a 15% raise and $500,000 in cash restricted stock to go work for Facebook. So, Google smartened up: when another staff engineer was seduced by Facebook, Google offered them $3.5 million — yes, million — to stay. They accepted.

Tech: Apple I auctioned: Own a piece of computer history that Woz built

  • Are you the kind of person who doesn’t consider money an object? Did you solder your first computer together from a kit? Did you write your own operating system based on an article you read in BYTE Magazine way back in 1979? Did you parlay your nerdery into the kind of success that someone who is unfamiliar with the work of Raymond Feist could never even dream of? If so, this Christie’s auction is for you. It’s the original Apple I, and the auction starts off at a modest $160,000 – a few bucks more than its original $666.66 price. Have at it, nerd. source

Tech: That Facebook-Google fight over your friends gets nasty

  • The war over importing contacts escalates. The other day, Google decided to stop allowing Facebook to import their contacts, partly for competitive reasons. Facebook then devised a way around it that was actually pretty clever. Google has now put up this scare page to let people know that no, you shouldn’t offer your data to Facebook so quickly. So, why won’t Facebook bend on this issue again? And what does this mean for other services that aren’t Google? Well, a key Facebook engineer argues that Google doesn’t practice what it’s preaching. This is a pretty drama-laden fight that keeps getting bigger. source

Tech: Google outdoes itself again with very smart Instant Previews

  • Wouldn’t it be great if you could scroll over search result and figure out whether you’re about to click on a virus, a SEO-gaming site or a site with actual content? Well, just weeks after they launched Instant Search, Google’s upped the game again, offering Instant Previews. This is a logical improvement on Google’s search technology and we’re glad to see it. source

Biz, Tech: Oracle, new HP CEO Leo Apotheker dealing with some stuff

  • Oracle’s Larry Ellison really dislikes HP, apparently. First, he swiped their former chief executive, who was not only good at his job, but was removed for fairly questionable reasons. (HP didn’t like that, by the way.) Now, Ellison’s company has their sights set on their new CEO, Leo Apotheker, the weirdly hired former SAP CEO. See, a subsidiary of SAP, TomorrowNow, reportedly engaged in software theft from Oracle. Oracle thinks SAP owes them billions of dollars; SAP claims it’s closer to tens of millions. Either way, Oracle has hired a private investigator to find Apotheker after HP would not accept Oracle’s subpoena for Apotheker to testify in court about the case (and Apotheker skipped an earlier trial). In other news, Silicon Valley business is pretty cutthroat. (Above: Artist’s depiction of what we think the private investigator looks like.) source

Tech: Windows Phone 7’s launch: Some positives, some negatives

  • good Microsoft drew over 200 people to a San Francisco AT&T store for its Windows Phone 7 launch today. It’s like an Apple launch, right?
  • bad Nearly all of them were there to nab tickets for a Maroon 5 concert to celebrate the phone’s launch. Barely anyone bought it. source
  • » On the plus side: Not everywhere was like San Francisco, apparently. The phone was reportedly sold out at stores in other major cities, including Atlanta, and around the world, the phone is faring much better than in the iPhone-heavy Bay Area. The lesson here: Are Maroon 5 fans really interested in buying a Windows phone?

Tech: New browser startup Rockmelt lies to us right off the bat

  • Yeah yeah, Toby… You think you’ll be able to charm us into downloading a copy of the Rockmelt beta by talking about your apartment above a bar with turtle racing … but we have a secret for you guys. Moorhead’s Scottish Pub doesn’t exist! We don’t care if Marc Andreessen managed to get a bunch of the old Netscape gang back together for this one. Or that you’re based off of Chromium. Or that you’re not as cluttered as that other browser with the same idea, Flock. You lied to us, and we don’t know what to believe anymore. TO-BY. source
