Tech, World: Everything you need to know about our latest planetary neighbor

  • hey kids, it’s a new planet! Say hello to Kepler-10b, the new kid in town. Or, to be more accurate, the new kid from out of town: this tiny, rocky planet actually resides outside of our solar system. It’s a little guy – the smallest, in fact, ever discovered outside of our Sun’s orbit. The confirmation of Kepler-10b’s existence is the product of over eight months of data collection, and represents the “first solid evidence of a rocky planet orbiting a star other than our sun.” Here are some key facts about it with which to impress your friends.
  • it’s a lot like usKepler-10b has a diameter 1.4x that of our beloved blue orb. It’s also classified as a “rocky” planet, meaning it has a composition similar to that of Earth (as opposed to a gaseous planet like Saturn).
  • it’s probably way hotAlthough the physical composition of the planet would render it capable of hosting water, it’s way too close to the star it orbits (its “Sun,” if you will) for that to be possible.
  • nasa’s pumped about itWhile Kepler-10b is outside of the “habitable zone,” scientists are giddy about its mere discovery, and optimistic that the spacecraft that found it will yield more results in the future. source

Tech: This is what color e-ink looks like, guys. Whaddya think?

So, here’s a shot of a color e-ink screen from a Chinese manufacturer who isn’t Amazon. Cool, but not super-high-contrast. Will Amazon eventually go for this, anyway? source

Tech: Smart: Apple washing its hands of Verizon iPhone announcement

  • This is the sort of thing where Apple needs to play it cool, and act like this is just another carrier. Good news, but not big news. The bottom line from Apple is going to be something like, ‘We’re delighted to add Verizon as an iPhone carrier’. That’s it.
  • Daring Fireball’s John Gruber • Offering some perspective on Verizon’s forthcoming announcement, likely about the iPhone coming to the wireless provider (freaking finally). Truth is, this is a smart move. Back in 2006, Apple had a special event for stuff unworthy of a special event (remember the overpriced iPod Hi-Fi?) and they drew a ton of criticism, creating one of their biggest stumbles in recent memory. By having an Apple special event for the Verizon iPhone, they’d run the same risk. So, handing it over to Verizon gets around the problem entirely. Plus, now Verizon can fight with AT&T without Apple getting its hands dirty. Smart. source

Tech: Apple’s Mac App Store: A cool concept, with caveats

  • So, look, the idea sounds cool. And we admit to be looking forward to checking it out. But at the same time, we totally understand why some developers might be freaking out. If the app store is successful at changing the behavior of Apple’s biggest die-hards, it could turn consumers used to spending $20-30 on a program into people who routinely complain that an app costs more than $2. But if this thing is a hit, just think of the scale it could have! So, as you browse through the 1,000+ apps on the store today, keep that in mind before you go too crazy. source

Tech: MetroPCS decides to ensure nobody switches to their service

  • december The FCC approves new net-neutrality rules that give more power to mobile providers while mostly blocking content limitations for landline users. Basically nobody liked the plan.
  • january Just a few days into the new year, MetroPCS is ready to try out the new policy with a tiered data system that limits users’ access to non-YouTube video and audio content on the lowest tier. source

Tech: Vaporware list: “Duke Nukem Forever” still getting mentioned

  • So, it’s been like a decade since our boy Duke Nukem first showed up on Wired’s long-running vaporware list, and even though it looks like it’s actually gonna get released this year (seriously!), he still made honorable mention on the list. On this year’s list? At least two tablets and a Chrome OS laptop which we’re still waiting for Google to send us. source

Tech: On iPhones, alarm clocks, and the quality of our own internal clock

  • so, our alarm didn’t go off this morning. Weirdest thing. It was set and everything, but it simply didn’t make noise. Fortunately, our internal clock managed to wake us up at 9 a.m. so it wasn’t too bad. But apparently the problem is widespread. See, our alarm clock? It’s an iPhone. And for some strange reason, the alarm stopped working on everyone else’s phones, leading to people not waking up in the morning. While Apple claims the problem will disappear on January 3rd … uh, wow. How did this happen in the first place? Isn’t this something you might test when you’re building your Jesus-phone? source
