Politics: Is ABC blowing a golden opportunity with Jake Tapper?

  • He topped “Meet the Press” in the ratings on Sunday. Months ago, ABC decided to take their political roundtable show, “This Week,” and give it to Christiane Amanpour, a solid international journalist who might be a questionable choice for hosting a national political show. In that time, Jake Tapper, the interim host, has grown ever-more popular thanks to his fresh, social-media-friendly approach to the program. Now, his show, which ends in August, is topping even “Meet the Press” among political shows. Mediaite says they should just give him his own show. We agree. It seems like he could do a lot with it. source

Politics: Max Headroom: Michael Steele gets support from (only) Ron Paul

  • Ron Paul: You’re lying! In this clip with Don Lemon earlier today, Paul, who’s speaking from Skype, claims that Lemon is misconstruing Steele’s comments. Prior to that is a pretty good catch-up on the whole situation, including John McCain and Jim DeMint ripping Steele’s leadership.

  • Erick Erickson rips SteeleThe RedState.com blogger, known for his controversial comments, already said that Steele should resign, but doesn’t think he will, because he’s not concerned for the health of the party, but the success of Michael Steele. We shockingly agree with him 100 percent.

  • Is this about race?Cynthia Tucker of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution speaks so negatively of both Steele and the process that led to his RNC leadership position that she suggests Steele got in through a bizarre form of affirmative action, and he doesn’t deserve the job.

Politics: Anderson Cooper on oil spill media zones: He sounds angry

  • Know what’s been missing from CNN all these months? Stuff like this. The network’s real problem is not that it doesn’t have yakkers, but its model has become tired and unemotional. And you can hear it in Cooper’s voice here. He’s super-emotional, in a “mad as hell and can’t take it anymore” sorta way. Give us a reason to care, CNN, and we’ll come back.

Politics: Jeb Bush big ups help for immigrants; commenters miss the point

  • One important difference, however, that separates immigration then and now: We native-born Americans are doing less than our great-grandparents did to welcome immigrants.
  • Jeb Bush and Robert D. Putnam • Describing the issues facing legal (not illegal, big difference) immigration in the 21st century. Those coming from other countries bring essential skills, but the route they face is more difficult than ever – these two guys suggest stronger English education, investing more in public education and giving communities facing large influxes of immigrants some financial help. As you might assume, this article from the Washington Post attracted crazy commenters like light attracts moths. Our favorite was, “One of the stupidest articles printed in the history of the Washington Post.” source

Politics: Michael Steele is an idiot, reason 3,149: Trashing the Afghan War

  • “This is a war of Obama’s choosing.” Wait a second, we’re not geniuses here, but we’re pretty sure that the GOP largely supports the Afghan War, too, not just Obama. And here’s Steele suggesting it can’t be won, that a land war in Afghanistan is “the one thing you don’t do.” Whether or not these comments were taken out of context, let’s face it – this guy says incredibly stupid crap from time to time. Both parties are criticizing him for this one. And they should. It totally shows a lack of understanding of his own party’s message. source

Politics: L.A. Times’ misleading King Kong ad: Even politicians don’t like it

  • This L.A. Times ad drew a ton of controversy yesterday because it looks very much like a real newspaper. It fooled a lot of people, to the point that the L.A. County Board of Supervisors criticized the paper for the choice, which the editor is defending. We shouldn’t lower our standards to be misleading like this; it’s wrong, plain and simple. source

Politics: NY Times blogger: This economy needs help to get it going

  • The overall picture isn’t so much of a double-dip recession as it is of a badly wounded economy recovering at a slow pace.
  • New York Times “Economix” blogger David Leonhardt • Analyzing what these job numbers mean. Essentially, Leonhardt thinks the economy needs something else to prop it up and encourage growth. There is silver lining, though – fewer people are looking for part-time work at the expense of full-time work, and the recovery may not be so bad. “History suggests that true job growth may also be a bit better the Labor Department is estimating,” Leonhardt writes. “That’s the usual pattern in the early stages of a recovery.” source

Politics: Daily Kos’ pollster was making stuff up? We’re not making this up.

  • And now the liberal-leaning site is suing Research 2000. Fans of seeing those on the far left fall on their faces, this is your lawsuit. Daily Kos’ polling company, Research 2000, reportedly made up a number of widely-reported surveys which it did for Kos. Worse, they would not give Kos the raw data for these surveys (which they paid over $100,000 for), further raising suspicions. You know, we’ve been critical of right-leaning pollsters Rasmussen in the past, but we’re pretty sure they’ve done nothing like this (and that their data is actually sound). source

Politics: Unemployment benefits: Robert Byrd’s death held this up, too

  • what The Senate’s attempt to increase unemployment benefits failed to pass yet again last night.
  • why They didn’t have 60 votes to stop the filibuster; they had 59. The 60th would’ve been Byrd. source

Politics: You happy, National Enquirer? Al Gore massage case reopened

  • Because it’s going to go somewhere … yeah. Thanks to all the new attention the massage/sexual assault report has been getting, the Portland Police Department reopened the case today. Gore’s people are optimistic that it won’t hurt the former presidential wannabe, with one spokesperson saying reopened the case “will only benefit Mr. Gore.” In other news, we wonder what fellow National Enquirer-outed presidential wannabe (and Lindsay Lohan wannabe) John Edwards has been up to lately … source
