Biz, Offbeat: We appreciate this entrepreneur’s sentiment if not his product

  • I don’t think people realize how much you have to go through. They think, ‘I have a great idea and I’m going to make a lot of money off it.’ If you have a great idea, that’s only 5 percent of it.
  • Entrepreneur Robert Stribling • Who’s talking about a new style of juice straws that doesn’t leak all over you if you put it in too fast. He’s spent millions of dollars in research and development but has no takers for his snake oil. • source

Offbeat: Here’s your bold-faced dog-related idea of the day

  • So here’s the idea you’ve been patiently waiting for: let’s simply say that dog breeds are different species.
  • Steve Mirsky • In an essay in the Scientific American, arguing that the re-labeling of different breeds of dogs could be used to prove evolution to creationists. Seems reasonable. • source

Offbeat, Sports: NFL players and Freightliner trucks don’t mix with cops

  • Uhhhhhhh, that’s quite the adventure, Randy Starks … Starks, a 25-year-old defensive end for the Miami Dolphins, was arrested after a police chase in which he managed to squeeze 13 people inside the passenger area of a Freightliner truck, which usually seats about 4. He also had a woman sitting on his lap. Due to traffic, police were forced to chase Starks by foot. The truck, traveling at slow speeds, hit one officer before another one drew Starks’ attention and arrested him. The Dolphins, who had no comment, are trying to figure out WTF their player did. So are we. source

Offbeat: Remember Mary Kay LeTourneau? She’s still diggin’ on her student

  • It wouldn’t be funny if it was a situation that was happening right now. But it’s a situation that happened a long time ago, she served her time, now they’re married, they had kids together, and we’re just having fun.
  • Mike Morris • Owner of Fuel Sports Eats and Beats in Seattle, which hosted a “Hot for Teacher” night featuring Mary Kay Letourneau, shamed years ago for having a relationship with her student, and Vili Fualaau, the former student (and current husband) who DJ’ed at the event as DJ Headline. It’s like creepy and awesome at the same time. • source

Offbeat: An architect trapped in the closet makes the best of it

  • $150 a month for an eco-friendly hole in the wall. Sergio Santos of Delray Beach, Fla. has designed lots of big buildings such as high-rises, but his most impressive work may be the 5 1/2 by 14 feet room he’s living in after getting laid off in January. He’s designed the space in such a way that it’s multi-functional, architecturally attractive and interesting enough that the local newspaper did a story about it. Personally, we hope it helps his love life. “Step inside my closet, baby. …” source

Culture, Offbeat: Fake Steven Tyler won’t stop suing me!

  • The Aerosmith lead singer is mad about bloggers swiping his likeness. Tyler, who became a minor Internet meme thanks to Rock Band’s over-reliance on his vocal track in some songs, recently attempted to sue a handful of anonymous bloggers for pretending to be him and sharing private facts about him and his family. Basically, it equates to drama. source
