Music: Gerard Smith, bassist for TV On The Radio, dies of lung cancer

  • Gerard Smith, dead at 34: Smith was the bass player for eclectic rock band “TV on the Radio,” and was receiving treatment for lung cancer. His bandmates released this statement: “We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer. Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly.” Deepest condolences to his friends and family — 34 is too damn young to go, especially from such a terrible disease. source

Music: Hey, guess who Smashing Pumpkins’ new bassist is?

  • One of these two girls may be Nicole Fiorentino: Fiorentino recently became the band’s new bassist, and Billy Corgan claimed on Twitter after she joined, she revealed that she was one of the girls in the above album that anyone worth their salt in 1993 owned. (“Today” still sounds just as good many days later.) She said that she held the info back out of fear it would cost her the gig. Anyway, because Rolling Stone likes bursting bubbles, they got a hold of the photographer involved in this shot, who claims that Fiorentino, 31, was too old for the photo. Even though they claim this, she looks almost exactly like the girl on the right. WE WANT TO BELIEVE. source

Music: On Justin Beieber fans defacing Esperanza Spalding’s Wikipedia page

  • Look, these attacks appear personal. It appears that Ms. Esperanza Spalding’s Wikipedia page has been attacked by the Bieber faithful for her win for Best New Artist at the Grammys last night – a ringer who beat out four well-known acts. But, a piece of advice to Bieber fans: If you want to deface a page, how about the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences one? It’s their fault that the Grammys are completely out of lockstep with pop music, that favors music completely out of the popular zeitgeist. Otherwise, stop watching The Grammys. There are other, more useful, ways to show your love for musicians. source

Biz, Music: Citigroup owns EMI: Will they start selling CDs at bank branches?

  • 2007 In one of the most un-rock-‘n’-roll moves a major label has ever done, private equity firm Terra Firma, led by financier Guy Hands, buys EMI for $6.7 billion, $4.3 billion of which was loaned to Terra Firma by Citigroup in a deal which looks really stupid in retrospect.
  • 2011 A few years after the financial crisis made that deal look like a really stupid idea, the musical home of Radiohead, Blur and The Beatles was just taken over by Citigroup. Which means that the company that runs your ATM also sells the Beastie Boys’ catalogue. source
