Culture, World: Chilean miners – all 33 of them – plotting huge book, movie deal

  • All the life story rights are vested in this company and we have not yet granted anyone the official rights to the story.
  • Chilean attorney Guillermo Carey • Discussing what the Chilean miners plan to do with their made-for-a-movie story. Rather than just letting any one of the guys individually release a book and fight for the movie rights (and thereby splitting the Chilean miner film market), they plan to do everything together, possibly as a massive package deal. The deal would mean that the miners would stand behind a single book and film deal, possibly with a multilevel promotional push that would make Brangelina jealous. We can’t wait to play the Chilean miner video game on our Nintendo Wii. We bet it’d be called “Run Inside of This Room for 69 Days.” Or possibly even a branded reboot of the “Lemmings” franchise. source

Culture: Jimmy Wales on Wikipedia’s future: We’ll make it easier to edit

  • We have to support our old power users because they build the site. But we also need to have a ramp for new users.
  • Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales • Explaining the the encyclopedia’s next move, as it celebrated its tenth anniversary, involved simplifying its complex editing process. “If you click edit and you see some Wiki syntax and some bizarre table structure — a lot of people are literally afraid,” he explained. “They’re good people and they don’t want to break something.” This would be the probable next step for the site to expand its audience from 400 million to what Wales hopes is 1 billion by 2015. Despite this, the organization has no plans to change its model, which involves fundraising, usually involving Jimmy WalesJoe-Millerish mug. Happy birthday, kids, and we’re sorry you’re no longer the most-famous Wiki-leader, Jimmy (friggin’ Julian)! source

Culture: Some weird viewing: Jared Loughner’s YouTube videos

  • Here’s some videos from Jared Loughner’s YouTube channel. In case you’re completely confused, so are we. The other clips are even more confusing. This kid had some major issues, apparently. Mind control and racism among the things brought up here.

Culture: Ted Williams’ ex-wife: He wasn’t around after drugs took over

Williams’ ex-wife, Patricia Kirtley, had four kids with Williams that she raised by herself for over two decades. She even raised a kid he had WITH ANOTHER WOMAN. source

Culture: We just found the most useless slideshow in online news history

  • Mila Kunis. Ashton Kutcher. Topher Grace. Most of the cast of “That ’70s Show” is still famous and in the news enough that a “Where are They Now?” slideshow isn’t really necessary. But that didn’t stop CNN from making one. The only real surprise is the very last one. source

Culture: So, how far did the homeless radio man Ted Williams fall?

  • Of all the people I’ve worked with in radio in 25 years, he would have been the last one I would guess would be famous. To be honest, I’m shocked he’s still alive, considering all the stuff he was into.
  • A former co-worker of golden-voiced homeless man Ted Williams • Explaining their experience working in radio with the man who’s dramatically been given multiple second chances this week. Williams, who has spent about five months in jail over the last twenty years and has a long-ranging list of misdemeanors, reportedly had a reputation of theft, according to the co-worker. Williams, who has six children (and myriad grandchildren and great-grandchildren), ended his marriage in 1998 because of his infidelity and crack-cocaine habit. He’s been clean for the last two years, and showed up on the “Today Show” this morning. Talk about comeback stories. Let’s hope that this time, he doesn’t get sucked into a world of drugs and alcohol. source

Culture: Golden-voiced homeless guy comes with lots of baggage

  • » The Cavs still want to help, though: Look, if you have a long history of drug and alcohol abuse like Williams here, it’s understandable that there might be a criminal record in there. But that isn’t deterring Quicken Loans, which owns the Cleveland Cavaliers and has offered Williams a home along with an voiceover job with the team and company. “We believe in second chances and second opportunities,” said Tracy Marek, senior vice president of marketing for the Cavaliers. “The gentleman deserves an opportunity to explain certain situations. We’re not jumping to conclusions. It’s not fair.” We hope that the obvious rough edges don’t deter anyone else, either. Too many give up on the homeless – and most of them don’t become YouTube celebrities.

Culture: Macaulay Culkin home alone, without Mila Kunis. Sigh

  • Eight years is a long time for a couple to be together when they haven’t married. Especially in Hollywood, where it seems like couples break up every week. So it’s understandable that one might feel bad for Macaulay Culkin, who has been dating Mila Kunis (the girl who started out as a co-star of “That ’70s Show” and the voice of the frumpy girl on “Family Guy,” and ended up a probable Oscar winner for “Black Swan”) for eight years. Poor Mac. Dude has had an ultra-weird life, but the normalcy of dating Mila Kunis probably helped. source

Culture: In general, we’re watching more television – and a LOT less CNN

  • +1% the increase in the total audience on all cable and broadcast television channels in 2010
  • -7% the decrease in Fox News’ total audience – they’re still on top of the cable news game
  • -34% the decrease in CNN’s total audience – the worst of any cable network, period source
  • » Time to bring back “Pop-Up Video”: Behind CNN, the second-biggest loser in cable was VH1 (down 31 percent), which, unlike big gainer The History Channel (up 34 percent), is unable to bank on an antiques-and-pawn-shop lineup to pump up the ratings.

Culture: Survey participants deny paying for online porn

  • 2% of Internet users pay for pornography source
  • » Really? Only 2%? Not that we’re, uhh, experts on online pornography, but 2% sounds really, really low. These statistics are hard to come by, but one site reported that over $3,000 is spent on pornography every minute. We smell shenanigans. And by “shenanigans,” we mean “people lying to an interviewer because they’re embarrassed about paying for porn.” On the other hand, considering how ubiquitous free porn is on the internet, maybe 2% isn’t that low after all.
