U.S.: What did the assailant in the Gabrielle Giffords shooting look like?

  • The man was young, mid-to-late 20s, clean-shaven with short hair and wearing dark clothing and said nothing during the shooting or while being held down. He didn’t look like a businessman, but more of a ‘fringe character,’ our source said.
  • Gawker’s Adrian Chen • In an article describing the assailant in the Gabrielle Giffords shooting earlier today. Giffords was one of six killed. Gawker got quite the source for this information – one of the guys who held down the gunman. Giffords was one of thirteen reportedly shot during an informal event at a Safeway in Tucson, Arizona, within her district. Many have made light of the fact that Sarah Palin put her on this list. While it’s too soon to assume anything, let’s just keep Giffords’ family and the other victims in our prayers. source

Biz: Does Goldman Sachs’ Facebook deal hurt their image rehab?

  • The committee was undertaken in the hope and the commitment to do some things that were going to help restore and improve trust … [Instead] people are going to look at it and say do those standards seem credible in light of the Facebook deal?
  • Boston University School of Management professor James Post • Suggesting that the recent Facebook deal that Goldman Sachs put together may be questionable in the light of Goldman’s recent ethics troubles. The company even put together a business standards committee to help prevent future kerfluffles. They have a report that’s coming out next week. But instead of the story being the ethics report and the image rehab work that Goldman is doing, it’s Facebook. Somebody somewhere screwed up. source

World: Why’s the U.S. government subpoenaing Twitter about Wikileaks?

  • If the Iranian government was to attempt to coercively obtain this information from journalists and activists of foreign nations, human rights groups around the world would speak out.
  • Julian Assange • Expressing anger towards the U.S. government’s subpoena of Twitter over Wikileaks, which has been under wraps until now. Wikileaks is also concerned about whether they’ve been doing the same thing with We’re with Assange. He has a perfectly valid point here. We put the U.S. up to a double-standard that we wouldn’t be caught dead allowing the rest of the world to follow. And it doesn’t get any more obvious until secret subpoenas are part of the deal. It’s times like these that we wish Twitter was decentralized. source

Tech: This is what color e-ink looks like, guys. Whaddya think?

So, here’s a shot of a color e-ink screen from a Chinese manufacturer who isn’t Amazon. Cool, but not super-high-contrast. Will Amazon eventually go for this, anyway? source

Politics: TSA: Don’t try to be cute with your underwear choices, terrorists

  • Passengers should be aware that the use of these types of products will likely result in a pat-down. Some might think this is TSA’s way of getting back at clever passengers. That’s not the case at all. It’s just security.
  • The TSA’s ultra-friendly PR blogger, “Blogger Bob” • Telling people that they can’t wear underwear cleverly designed to block nether-regions from full-body scanners without risking a pat-down. Which is a clever idea, but apparently too clever for the TSA. One commenter put it like so: “Bob, how does it feel telling citizens what kind of panties they should wear?” We’d like to buy that commenter a beer. source

Offbeat: Not what you think: Actress swipes infant from young mother

  • yeah … When you think of a story about an actress snatching a baby from its mother, you think of Madonna going to some random third-world country ready to cherry-pick her next family member.
  • … but This time, the case involved an aspiring actress who placed an ad on Craigslist casting for a Bollywood movie in Toronto, and then took some poor mother’s infant. What the hell, lady? source

Tech: Smart: Apple washing its hands of Verizon iPhone announcement

  • This is the sort of thing where Apple needs to play it cool, and act like this is just another carrier. Good news, but not big news. The bottom line from Apple is going to be something like, ‘We’re delighted to add Verizon as an iPhone carrier’. That’s it.
  • Daring Fireball’s John Gruber • Offering some perspective on Verizon’s forthcoming announcement, likely about the iPhone coming to the wireless provider (freaking finally). Truth is, this is a smart move. Back in 2006, Apple had a special event for stuff unworthy of a special event (remember the overpriced iPod Hi-Fi?) and they drew a ton of criticism, creating one of their biggest stumbles in recent memory. By having an Apple special event for the Verizon iPhone, they’d run the same risk. So, handing it over to Verizon gets around the problem entirely. Plus, now Verizon can fight with AT&T without Apple getting its hands dirty. Smart. source
