U.S.: Obama’s got the nuclear option for health care planned

  • If Scott Brown wins tomorrow, the Senate bill hits the House floor. Facing a possibly embarrassing loss for the Democratic party in Massachusetts tomorrow, President Obama has a pretty good solution in mind for the health care bill that he’s long fought for. The Senate bill – which has already passed – will get sent, with no changes, to the House. Then it gets voted on. And if it passes, this massive cluster#(&@ of a bill will finally get signed by Obama. A little sneaky, but it technically works – and fast! Well, as long as everybody goes along with the plan. source

Biz: Taco Bell founder Glen Bell dies, leaves trail of chalupas behind

  • These were true entrepreneurs. These weren’t people who did hostile takeovers. They took a risk, had a dream and went out and financed it. And nobody did it better then Glen Bell.
  • Stater Bros. Markets chairman Jack Brown • Regarding friend and Taco Bell founder Glen Bell, who died today at 86. Before it became a brand synonymous with the generalization of Mexican food, Taco Bell innovated the fast food process by proving it could be done with products slightly less traditional than burgers, fries and shakes. Beyond turning Taco Bell into an incredibly successful business that PepsiCo eventually bought (and was later spun off as the centerpiece of Yum! Brands), Bell planted the seed that made it possible for an incredibly varied array of fast food – from Potbelly to Panera to Chipotle – to diversify the market. A questionable legacy to some, but it’s totally his. source

Culture: “Avatar” the superstar of last night’s somber Golden Globes

  • 3D is going to be the future. The one thing ‘Avatar’ could do because of its success – especially its critical success – is give permission to other filmmakers to think of 3D.
  • “Avatar” director James Cameron • Regarding his wins at the Golden Globes last night – including best director and best film drama. The awards show favored crowd pleasers over arthouse flicks – “The Hangover” won best film comedy, and Sandra Bullock’s popular role in “The Blind Side” won best film actress in a drama. But really, Haiti was on the minds of the stars at the awards gala, with many wearing ribbons and giving words of support to the devastated country. source
