U.S.: ELECTION RESULTS: Chris Christie upsets Jon Corzine in New Jersey

  • It was a close race, at the end, but it wasn’t enough to keep the incumbent in office. In an election night which is starting to look like a wash for the Democrats, the Republicans won the two biggest prizes up for grabs. Poll numbers at the end leaned towards Corzine, but independents didn’t stick with him. The AP is calling this (and we usually boycott them), but we feel that this news is big enough that it’s worth an exception. source

U.S.: Justice for interracial-barring justice of the peace in Louisiana

  • The heavily-criticized Keith Bardwell resigned today. The justice of the peace submitted his resignation in person to Louisiana’s Secretary of State. Bardwell has been under fire since refusing to perform the marriage of Beth Humphrey and Terence McKay last month. The couple, which married under a different justice, sued Bardwell and his wife, saying they violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. While Bardwell stands behind his actions, he resigned “because they was going to take me to court, and I was going to lose.” Smart move. source

  • From North Cackalackly to Congress. Any man from North Carolina who can use the Impact font with this much, uh, IMPACT, deserves to be in Congress. We hope he gets elected. Then we hope he ends up taking shots in a Capital Hill bar with Alan Grayson. Then, we expect him to redesign our site. We’ll be ready for ShortFormBlog 3.0 by the time America is ready for this bastard to take office. Does he do freelance? source

U.S.: ELECTION RESULTS! Bob McDonnell clobbers Creigh Deeds in Virginia

  • Just look at these poll numbers! Creigh Deeds never had a chance. And he did so poorly that the race could be called almost immediately after the polls close. Is this a bad sign for Obama? Who knows. All we know is that that whole Regent University paper controversy never once nicked McDonnell. Congrats, new Virginia governor. Let us know if you want to hang with the ShortFormBlog staff in Adams Morgan at some point. We imagine that place is totally your scene on Saturday night at about 2:30 a.m. source

Culture: TWO Oscar hosts? Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin share the stage

  • the newb Alec Baldwin hasn’t hosted the Oscars before, but he’s hosted Saturday Night Live 14 times, which is about as good as hosting an Oscar ceremony. Beyond his lengthy film career, he’s probably best known for “30 Rock” and letting his less-famous brothers crash next year’s Oscars.
  • the vet Steve Martin has already hosted the Oscars twice, in 2001 and 2003. The jack of all trades (he has an Emmy, two Grammys and a doctorate) has successful writing, music (he’s an awesome banjo player), acting and comedy careers under his belt. Plus, he can juggle. Can you, jerk? source
