U.S.: Yo Obama: Bud Light sucks. Use this microbrew instead.

  • We’re reaching out quietly… We’re trying to network our way in. We’d love to be the beer at this event.
  • Harpoon Brewery co-founder Dan Kenary • On the company’s desire to use back-door channels to convince the powers that be to use his beer during the anticipated photo-op meeting between the president, Henry Louis Gates and James Crowley, the cop who arrested the Harvard scholar. The other two guys have a little taste – Gates will be reppin’ Red Stripe and Crowley has been known to dig Blue Moon, but President Obama for some reason insists on drinking Budweiser. Dude. We know you can do better. • source

Sports: Armstrong and Contador confirm that the hate doesn’t stop in Paris

  • My relationship with Armstrong
is nil. He’s a great champion, and he had a great race in this Tour, but it’s something else on a personal level, where I’ve never had a great admiration for him, and I never will.
  • 2009 Tour de France winner Alberto Contador • On how he feels about his teammate, seven-time winner Lance Armstrong. But wait, it gets better. Armstrong responded on his Twitter, saying, “if I were him I’d drop this drivel and start thanking his team. Without them, he doesn’t win.” Oh SNAP!  • source

Sports: Michael Phelps lost today. No, not his bong, a race!

  • 200m freestyle is Michael Phelps’ specialty. He lost the race in Rome today to German Paul Biedermann. We’ve never heard of him either
  • four years since his last major individual loss. It’s being (partially) blamed on the high-tech, super-slick swimsuit the German donned source

Biz: You mean our alt-weekly might die? Screw it, we’re writing about sex

  • Tomorrow, the fate of our alt-weekly’s ownership may finally be decided, again. While Creative Loafing brass are hugging it out in Atlanta bankruptcy court, CP staff will be busy proving that we still deserve our paychecks. We’re spending the whole day writing about #^%#ing.
  • Washington City Paper blogger Amanda Hess • Describing her paper’s chosen way of dealing with the impending possible demise of her paper’s parent company, which is going to be in bankruptcy court tomorrow. WCP has been doing this a bit lately, including a notably frank Marion Barry cover a few weeks back. (Note: Link is NSFW.) • source

World: Hamid Karzai’s peeps say one thing, the Taliban another

  • The government is pleased A mouthpiece for Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai said a ceasefire has been negotiated in northwestern Badghis province for the election. It’s a first, and they’re calling it a model for maintaining the peace across the country. Score!
  • The Taliban is coy Afghan journos talked with a local militant, and he confirmed it all. The catch: one of the Taliban’s main spokesmen, Yousuf Ahmadi, vehemently denied the truce, saying, “With the government, we have no ceasefire.” That’s awkward.
  • The election is happeningThis leaves us with an election that is still happening August 20 and may or may not involve some sort of deal with the Taliban. Maybe. If it did, that would be sweet. If not, then some polling stations might be havin’ some major issues. source
