World: Honduras’ interim prez: I’ll step down for anyone except Zelaya

  • He wants to calm down tensions in the country. Roberto Micheletti, the dude who got put into power in the wake of Jose Manuel Zelaya’s coup last month, is softening his hold on the throne … er, presidency. He says he’s “willing to leave office if at some point that decision is needed to bring peace and tranquility to the country, but without, I stress, the return of former President Zelaya.” That last part, of course, is key. Don’t want no elected leaders returning to office! source

U.S.: Never a dull moment in D.C.: Guy shot, killed near Capitol

  • Whew. Just another average day in the District. A block away from the Capitol, a dude gets stopped for a routine traffic stop. He flees in his getaway car of choice – a white Mercedes – and hits a cop in the process, injuring him. He then drives into a police cruiser, gets out, and is cornered by police, who tell him to put down his weapon. He doesn’t do it, and is shot and killed. Like we said. Just another average day in the District.source

Biz, Tech: The stock market is totally in love with Intel right now

  • Late Tuesday, Intel announced that they had estimated current quarter sales of $8.5 billion, which totally blew analysts’ numbers out of the water. Even better, their previous-quarter sales managed to top analysts’ numbers, too. Good to see someone’s doing really well.

World: Chechen human rights activist kidnapped and murdered

  • It seems to be open season on anyone trying to highlight the appalling human rights abuses in Chechnya. It’s high time the Russian government acted to stop these killings and prosecute those responsible.

Prominent rights activist and researcher Natalia Estemirova was abducted outside her home in Ingushetia this morning and found dead just hours later. Politics, U.S.: Gee, House Republicans, when you explain health care like this …

healthcare0716
  • Wow. Where to start, where to start … We are not going to blame the Democrats for coming up with a complex, bureaucracy-filled health care plan. NO. We’re going to blame the Republicans for coming up with the most complicated, noise filled graphic possible to explain their point. You can make anything seem like the scariest thing ever when you make it look like this. Gray background? Not necessary. Loud, garish colors? Even less so. This is politics through bad design. U.S., World: Some foreign exchange students deal with nightmare conditions

  • They weren’t provided with food. In fact there is one incident with tape on food items in the refrigerator of the host family that says, ‘Do not touch. This is for the host family only.’ So basically they were neglected.
  • Lackawanna County, Pa. District Attorney Andrew Jarbola • Regarding the treatment of 12 foreign exchange students in Scranton, Pa. Many were underfed and lost lots of weight, housed with convicted felons and neglected. The students – from countries as far away as Norway, Colombia and Tanzania – were placed by the Aspect Foundation, some on State Department grants. By the end of the school year, five students were removed from awful host family situations. • source

World: What the Daily Telegraph is telling its readers, in a nutshell

  • Really, just forget everything we said. Women who drink booze are more likely to get raped…um, never mind. Women who dress “provocatively” are more likely to get raped…er, scratch that. Actually, remember everything we wrote in that article June 23? Yeah, we figured you would. Now you can go ahead and forget it all, wasn’t filled with a lot of “truthiness”…sorry. source
