World: Afghanistan moves into the 19th century with womens’ rights

  • Marital rape? Banned. Housework? Required. After a new law in Afghanistan essentially legalized a husband’s domination over a spouse, the law was toned down by President Hamid Karzai to only require the wife to do certain acts of housework. OK, maybe we’re spoiled by modernization, but is this really progress? Really? Can’t the man of the house occasionally clean the toilet? source

Culture: Well, that sucks. Appears major critics aren’t so hot on “Bruno”

  • The Washington Post’s Ann Hornaday, savaged Sacha Baron Cohen’s mock-doc, saying “the skits don’t add up to anything substantive, and even his swipes at U.S. politicians here seem gratuitously cruel.”
  • While Colin Covert of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune says Cohen’s latest is “a bit of a letdown” and notes that it feels padded, he still says “he’ll never run out of bigotry, idiocy and hypocrisy to spoof.”

World: This collection of advertising puts sleazy spambots to shame

The Guardian put together a photo gallery of some of the best ads focusing on environmental and social issues. And yes, one uses 9/11 for a freaky comparison. source

Offbeat, World: Obama wasn’t peeking a glance at some hottie. Sarkozy was.

  • You know the scene. Obama gets passed by some hot girl at G8’s summit in Italy, and a photo makes it look like he was totally catching a glimpse of the lady (who happens to be 16, by the way). Fortunately, video evidence proves otherwise. However, the evidence totally implicates French president Nicolas Sarkozy. YES!source

Music: Perez Hilton starts record label, still aiming for global domination

  • He says he really wants to be a gay, white Oprah. Well, he’s not starting a production company or opening schools in Africa – yet – but the guy does seem pretty intent on world domination. His gossip blog got a whopping 268.9 million hits in June and he can take credit for “discovering” the likes of Mika and Lady Gaga…that’s good, right? source

World: Journalist Iason Athanasiadis describes being held captive in Iran

  • There were people sitting in rows on the floor; … there were others being interrogated at little desks in the corridor because the interrogation rooms were full. I heard questions and shouts coming from the interrogation rooms and the occasional slap.
  • Iason Athanasiadis • Talking about the Iranian jail in the midst of a pretty scary response to election protests. Athanasiadis, a British-Greek journalist who speaks Farsi, was held in Tehran’s Evin prison for 18 days along with many jailed protesters. He’s a freelance reporter who often writes for the Washington Times. • source

Tech: Blocky wants to kill spam on Twitter – AND do it in pink

As someone who gets lots of spambot followers, we really dig this idea, but worry about false positives. And the fact that its maker likes pink so much. source

World: Duh: Man killed by bull-goring during the running of the bulls

  • Most obvious headline we’ll write all day. Now, we’re not rocket scientists here, but if a bull is running after tons of people, it’s probably gonna hurt someone, right? Well, that’s Pamplona, Spain for you, where Daniel Jimeno Romero, 27, was killed in a bull attack. He’s the 15th fatal victim of the bull running since records started to be kept in 1924, and – not counting a guy who died after being in a coma for six months – the first to die since 1995. It’s a stupid tradition which should end, both for the safety of the bulls and for that of the humans. source
