Culture: “Hangover” director Todd Phillips, on the movie’s surprise success

  • They gave us a standing ovation after the screening, which I’ve never seen before. I think everyone was drunk.
  • Todd Phillips • On the film’s Dublin premiere. Philips, who has the hits “Road Trip” and “Old School” to his name, is responsible for the third-largest opening for an R-rated comedy ever, which is even more impressive if you keep in mind three things: One, that the top two openings were major franchises (“Sex in the City” and “American Pie 2”); two, that the movie had no marquee stars (we’re so happy Zach Galifianakis has been unleashed on the world); and three, that Phillips started his career as a documentarian for shock-rocker GG Allin. • source

Sports: Oakland Raiders fans: Blame this guy for your Super Bowl XXXVII loss

  • I felt that if I had played that game, we had a lot better chance to win. I felt we would have
been able to win that game. It was an extremely exhausting event and put me down as far as I probably ever had to go at that point in my life.
  • Former Raiders center Barret Robbins • Who is in a halfway house after a stay in jail. Robbins disappeared two days before the 2003 Super Bowl and blames himself for the team’s loss. that wasn’t his only problem – he was booted from the league in 2004 after testing positive for steroids and in 2005 got into a fight with police where he got shot. Robbins just left jail after violating his probation after being caught using drugs. Dude, stay clean. • source

U.S., World: The U.S. thinks Iran’s election results are looking all wrong

  • The White House is worried about Iran’s irregularities. Between an official statement by The White House and quotes from Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, we know that the U.S. is not particularly happy with the results of Iran’s election. “We obviously hope that the outcome reflects the genuine will and desire of the Iranian people,” Clinton said. While publicly no White House official has taken sides, they privately hope that Mir Hossein Mousavi is the eventual victor. On two occasions (including a BIG DEAL speech in Egypt) President Obama has made overtures to Iran with no response. source

World: More interesting stuff from the Iran election dramarama

  • We were struck by this quote by an Iranian state employee: “They have totally fooled us. This time they went too far. They just want to eliminate ‘republic’ and turn this into an Islamic dictatorship.”
  • The liberal-leaning Daily Kos has a snarky bit on what’s transpired: “The Iranian election thieves gave Mahmoud Ahmadinejad 62% of the vote, 11% more than he needed. That’s just wasteful.”
  • The protests have gotten more violent, and there’s lots of photographic proof of how bad it’s gotten. The Washington Post has a really good selection of some of the day’s most interesting photos.

Offbeat: People for the Ethical Treatment of Drama have a problem with Seattle

  • Killing animals so you can toss their bodies around for amusement is just twisted.
  • PETA senior campaigner Ashley Byrne • On the famous, long-popular trend of throwing fish at Pike Place Fish Market. In response, Jeremy Ridgway, a manager at the market, notes: “I mean, the fish are dead. The thing is, we’re not laughing and making fun of them. . . . It’s just Point A to Point B. That’s why we do it.” We’re guessing if the workers started throwing tofu or possibly even falafel, it wouldn’t have the same level of popularity. • source

Music: Our Saturday mixtape: From Kraftwerk to projectors that are dirty

  • 1. It’s weird how much influence Kraftwerk wields, and how few people talk about it. They literally wrote the template for electronic music but don’t get constant adoration. “Pocket Calculator” is early synthpop perfected.

    2. Chiptune music is clearly influenced by Kraftwerk, and 8 Bit Weapon, led by Seth Sternberger and represented here by “Bit ‘n’ Run,” is a strong example of the form.

    3. Wow, “Bitte Orca” by the Dirty Projectors sure lived up to the hype, didn’t it? And they did it while making it look easy. “Useful Chamber” is – in our opinion – the album’s high point. It’s like Of Montreal’s “Skeletal Lamping” with asides that actually make sense.

    4. We’re convinced that whereever Gang Gang Dance’s “House Jam” is playing, there’s a massive party going on. And of course, someone forgot to invite us.

    5. There’s a lot of versions of Os Mutantes’ “Baby” floating around, but this one, with its garagey edges, is our favorite. Rita Lee’s 1971 acoustic version is also worth your time.source

Culture, Politics: Carrie Prejean: Still crazy, but now she’s talking to Larry King

  • This isn’t about appearances. This isn’t about a breach of contract. This is about Keith Lewis not agreeing with the stance that I took on saving traditional marriage. And from day one, he wanted me out.
  • Former Miss California Carrie Prejean • Who is still claiming that the whole incident around her firing had to do with her answer about gay marriage in the Miss USA pageant, not the completely juvenile way she acted towards Keith Lewis after the incident. The way she describes Lewis in this interview does not match the e-mails at all. It doesn’t matter if you’re talking to an army of Larry Kings – that fact will not change. • source
