Culture: In general, we’re watching more television – and a LOT less CNN

  • +1% the increase in the total audience on all cable and broadcast television channels in 2010
  • -7% the decrease in Fox News’ total audience – they’re still on top of the cable news game
  • -34% the decrease in CNN’s total audience – the worst of any cable network, period source
  • » Time to bring back “Pop-Up Video”: Behind CNN, the second-biggest loser in cable was VH1 (down 31 percent), which, unlike big gainer The History Channel (up 34 percent), is unable to bank on an antiques-and-pawn-shop lineup to pump up the ratings.

Culture: Reality show killer Ryan Jenkins left a “suicide note,” guys

  • The lack of acknowledging that he’d just lost his wife speaks volumes.
  • Buena Park Police Sgt. William Kohanek • Discussing the note that the police found on Jenkins’ computer. While not a suicide note, per ce, the “Megan Wants a Millionaire” star did leave a will and discuss the frustration he felt towards the love of his life, Jasmine Fiore, who was divorcing him when she was found dead. • source

Culture: How did a dude like Ryan Jenkins get on reality TV, anyway?

  • Part of the problem is there’s such a huge machine needing people to go on TV. . . . But the problem is: If you need so many contestants, you’re probably not going to do the best job of screening them.
  • University of Southern California communication professor Jon Taplin • Discussing the nature of the Ryan Jenkins case. In Jenkins’ situation, VH1’s production company, 51 Minds blamed “an error by a Canadian court clerk” for allowing Jenkins’ criminal past to slip through the cracks. Whatever the case may be, it’s clearly not a common situation, but it is a climate made worse by the needs of reality television. • source

Culture: That VH1/Ryan Jenkins mess sounds messier by the day

  • Detectives were unable to use dental records or fingerprints, as her teeth and fingers had been removed. But they tracked the number of her implants.
  • A description from a BBC article • On the death of model Jasmine Fiore, who VH1 reality show contestant Ryan Jenkins is accused of murdering. They had to figure out her identity based on her breast implants! Yuck! The nature of this murder sounds brutal and awful in just about every way. • source

Culture: This Ryan Jenkins case is looking like a real mess for VH1

  • Previous charges Despite the fact that the network’s production company for reality shows supposedly performs background checks on its contestants, they didn’t pull up a conviction for assault which led to probation. He got arrested in April, too. And he went to counseling for sex addiction. Not the kinda guy you want on a VH1 show. source

  • Another show Even worse for the network, Jenkins had recently shot a second still-unaired show called “I Love Money 3,” which features reality contestants from other VH1 shows. It may never see the light of day. Now isn’t looking like a bad time for the network to return to 60-hour Behind the Music marathons. source

Culture: “Megan Wants a Millionaire.” VH1 wants “Megan” to go away.

  • This show completed production at the end of March. Given the unfortunate circumstances, VH1 has postponed any future airings. This is a tragic situation and our thoughts go out to the victim’s family.
  • A statement from VH1 • Regarding pulling “Megan Wants a Millionaire” from their schedule after the death of a model involved with contestant Ryan Jenkins. Jenkins is currently on the run from the law. The case is sick and disturbing (the model, Jasmine Fiore, was found dead in a suitcase – yuck!), and VH1 is doing everything it can to wash its hands of it, noting that the show was “an outside production, produced and owned by 51 Minds, that is licensed to VH1.” Guys, take credit for running the show. You didn’t have anything to do with the contestant going crazy. • source

Culture: Real reality TV: “Megan wants a Millionaire” contestant on the lam

  • A VH1 reality show contestant is wanted in connection with a grisly murder. Ryan Jenkins, a guy who likes women so much that he’s a serial dater, is currently a “person of interest” in the kind of case that will have tabloid headlines for months based on the details. A swimsuit model (✓) was found dead (✓✓) with her body stuffed in a suitcase (✓✓✓✓✓✓) and Jenkins, who was on “Megan Wants a Millionaire,” is currently the main suspect. (✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓) Scary and sad story, but Nancy Grace is going to be all over this. source

Music: So, why did VH1 take “Behind the Music” off the air, anyway?

  • It felt like the time is right. There’s all sorts of new artists on the scene who have emerged and have these great stories. And there’s other artists that we always wanted to do the first time around.
  • Jeff Olde • VH1 executive VP of Original Programming, on the return of everyone’s favorite way to laze around on the couch on a Saturday afternoon. That’s right, the ultimate rock-documentary series “Behind the Music” is coming back, fresh with new shows on Scott Weiland and Lil Wayne, among others. • source
