World: Journalist Iason Athanasiadis describes being held captive in Iran

  • There were people sitting in rows on the floor; … there were others being interrogated at little desks in the corridor because the interrogation rooms were full. I heard questions and shouts coming from the interrogation rooms and the occasional slap.
  • Iason Athanasiadis • Talking about the Iranian jail in the midst of a pretty scary response to election protests. Athanasiadis, a British-Greek journalist who speaks Farsi, was held in Tehran’s Evin prison for 18 days along with many jailed protesters. He’s a freelance reporter who often writes for the Washington Times. • source

World: Iran’s attempts to graft outside influence on the protests continue

  • Yesterday, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad offered a scathing rebuke of U.S. President Barack Obama for giving support to protesters. The Iranian president played like Obama was meddling; the GOP wishes Obama would a little more.
  • And today, the British government’s escalating tensions with the country hit a head when Iran arrested nine embassy employees in Tehran. Foreign Secretary David Miliband was not very happy with this at all.

World: Today, hundreds are ignoring orders and protesting in Tehran

  • They’re defying orders and remembering Neda. The protesters are holding a vigil at Tehran’s Haft-e Tir Square for Neda, the young woman violently killed on camera over the weekend. One man was chased into an alley by Basij militia members. Protesting the Basijs and chasing them off, they shouted: “Do not be scared. We are all together.” That’s re-affirming. source

World: Wow. In this protest video, the cameraman was beaten.

  • This is scary. The protest starts out peaceful, than the riot police comes, and one of the victims is the guy holding the camera. (For those with weak stomachs, the violent action happens off-camera.)source

World: The current state of Tehran: Unease between military, protesters

  • After a long Saturday, things have (temporarily) quieted. On Saturday, we learned two things about the nature of the Iran protests: One, the government is no longer willing to accept peaceful dissent; and two, protesters are willing to risk their lives in the fight for the rights of the country’s people. Today, things have calmed down, but are expected to heat up again later in the day. Even if the protests calmed down after today, deep political wounds are now out in the open – something the Iranian government will struggle with easing. source
