Biz: Toyota’s way of handling recalls: Cover up, then come clean

  • I hate to break this to you, but we have a tendency for mechanical failure in accelerator pedals of a certain manufacturer on certain models. … The time to hide on this one is over. We need to come clean.
  • A note from Toyota executive Irving A. Miller • Admitting that they would have to recall millions of vehicles. Over a four-month period, the company had made an active effort to hide the problems with their cars from the government. Unsuccessfully. The New York Times’ document analysis suggests that there was a whole lotta fail going on with the vehicles, and a lot more cover-up. While the company obviously screwed up, some congressmen are suggesting that federal regulators should shoulder some of the blame. source

U.S.: Do mining regulators need more muscle to boost safety?

  • Every place I’ve ever worked, safety has been a distant second to production. If you take 30 minutes out of the day doing it right, that takes a lot out of the tonnage of the mine.
  • Kentucky-based miner Billy Brannon • Regarding safety standards for miners. In the wake of the Upper Big Branch mine disaster last week, which killed 29, many are questioning whether the government’s regulatory administration, The Mine Safety and Health Administration, has enough teeth to properly take on organizations like Massey Energy. Unlike the EPA and FDA, the MSHA doesn’t make its investigators law enforcement officers, and the fines the group offers are mere pittances – $168,393 for Massey, for example. source

Tech, World: Hugo Chavez says that the Internet needs national regulation

  • The Internet cannot be something open where anything is said and done. Every country has to apply its own rules and norms.
  • Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez • Saying the kind of thing that makes us want to throw stuff at the dude. He doesn’t want an open Interweb – he wants to block it to his standards. He’s not alone, obviously, but it’s not exactly the kind of thing that we want to see MORE support for. source

U.S.: Fans of open letters and the FDA regulating stuff, read this

  • Food and Drug Commissioner Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg rips hard on labeling. In case you find food labels a little misleading sometimes, this open letter by Dr. Hamburg should warm your heart. They’re going after companies who didn’t listen to the FDA’s mandate on food labels, and could take food off shelves if companies don’t listen. “To address these concerns,” she wrote, “FDA is notifying a number of manufacturers that their labels are in violation of the law and subject to legal proceedings to remove misbranded products from the marketplace.” Ouch. You feel that? That’s the regulatory hammer. source

U.S.: The EPA calls a spade a spade, says greenhouse gases a danger

  • This is a big deal, guys. The Obama administration now has a new tool to cut down on greenhouse gases. It’s the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA now will formally say that greenhouse gases are a danger to human health – something which will give them the right to do something even if Congress doesn’t act on regulating carbon emissions. Good timing, too, what with that whole Copenhagen emissions summit thingy starting up today. source
