Biz, U.S.: Big health insurers succeeding at crafting a favorable reform bill

  • They knew they had a very big [public relations] problem, and they knew this day was coming. They knew they had to be perceived as coming to the table with solutions. It was a departure from their previous point of view. But they knew they would be slaughtered if it weren’t.
  • Former Cigna Corp. public relations executive Wendell Potter • Describing the change in tactics that the health care industry has tried to help shape the health care bill in such a way that keeps them in the mix. Many are surprised that the health care industry hasn’t gotten the snot beaten out of it by congress, but the reason is that they’ve been working extra hard to make universal health care something that keeps them in the mix. So yeah, greeeeaaaaaat. • source

Biz: We really don’t lean either way on the Whole Foods debate

  • A lot of people have been paying a premium for the Whole Foods brand for years. A lot of people are sad to look at this corporation and see that it is just like any other, if not worse.
  • “Boycott Whole Foods” group founder Mark Rosenthal • Discussing the brand that set off a healthy round of Internet rage over the last week and a half. Since it launched, the group has gotten thousands of granola-eating hippie types in its grasp, angry that John Mackey, the guy who founded the company which they rely on for organic food, is actually a libertarian who doesn’t support universal health care. Personally, we feel like, while both sides have a point and Mackey should’ve kept his mouth shut, this debate is just getting more play now because the debate over universal health care has gotten so out of hand. Sigh. • source

Politics: Slate columnist: Why the public option should stay on the table

  • Why is the public option so vitally important to health reform? At the broadest possible level, the public option is necessary simply because it’s impossible to identify a successful health system anywhere in the world based on a for-profit insurance model.
  • Slate columnist Timothy Noah • Discussing the weaknesses in health care reform that will show up if the public option is off the table. While Obama prefers having it, he’s shown wavering over the last week that makes it seem less-necessary than it once did. Noah puts it this way: “You can also think of the public option as a pressure valve. Without it, the government’s attempt to remake the health sector risks blowing itself to smithereens.” • source

U.S.: The HuffPo’s survey tactics might not be legit, but their findings are

  • I just hope the American people won’t be dumb enough to continue falling for the line that socialized health care means a loss of personal freedom. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.
  • Canadian Lori Covington • On her country’s public healthcare system. The Huffington Post did a very unscientific email survey and found that it rocks. A lot. And that some Canadians think Americans are being pretty stupid about it.  • source
