Music: Thank the Lord. Sufjan Stevens is finally working on his next album

  • We’ve played on some of the tracks and been listening to some of the stuff as he’s been working on it. … It’s going to be incredible. It’s going to probably blow people’s minds.
  • The National’s Bryce Dessner • Revealing that Sufjan Stevens finally got off his butt and decided to start recording that new album, a whole five years after “Illinois” (and a whole year after we scolded him for keeping fans waiting). It’s not like he’s been quiet, though. He still runs his Asthmatic Kitty label, he’s done Christmas music, he released his “The BQE” art project last year, and he’s been a little too frank in interviews. No word on whether this will be another “state” album. source

Music: Five key moments in guitar innovator Les Paul’s life (R.I.P., bro)

  • 1941 Paul, a jazz musician, decided to get more sound out of his guitar by putting a log in the middle. In the process, he invented the solid-body guitar.
  • 1946 Paul experiments with a tape recorder in his garage. He layers his guitar’s tone on one song, “Lover,” and invents multi-track recording.
  • 1949 Paul divorces his first wife and marries Mary Ford, his music partner. The two spend much of the early 1950s as major musical stars, notching hits until 1955.
  • 1952 Gibson asks Paul to promote its new solid-body guitar; Paul influenced the guitar’s design only a little, but the guitar’s name helped build Paul’s legend.
  • later Paul never gave up his craft and continued to be a musical icon late in life, playing NYC clubs well into his 90s. Paul died Thursday at 94. His legacy is insane. source

U.S.: NASA: We’re a bunch of freaking idiots who delete moon footage

  • They deleted the tape! Yeah, that one! NASA, we’re sure with the same look that you had when you busted up your dad’s Dodge when you took your ex-girlfriend on a romantic camping vacation, admitted to accidentally deleting over the most iconic tape in their entire collection, the one that turns 40 this month. You know, the moon mission. The one with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Fortunately, they had some company, Lowry Digital, remaster the heck out of the footage to make it even better than the original. But still, idiots: Don’t delete tapes with important American history on them in a desire to save cash. source

Music: OMG OMG OMG Radiohead’s recording a new album! OMG!

  • It’s at the stage where we’ve got the big Lego box out and we’ve tipped it out on the floor and we’re just looking at all the bits and thinking what’s next?
  • Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood • On the startings of another album from the British superstars. If it’s half as good as “In Rainbows,” we can’t wait. Also, Thom Yorke regularly says awesome things. • source

Culture, Music: The cake is a lie: Rihanna/Chris Brown duet not real

  • It was an old recording used for reference vocals. Apparently, word on the street was that the tumultuous relationship between the two was on the mend (which is apparently true still) and the reunion would be cemented by a new recording. Their label reps deny this and say the song in question was written for someone else and the couple hasn’t recorded together since the incident. So much for good rumors, kids. source

Culture, Music: Chris Brown & Rihanna, sitting in a studio, R-E-C-O-R-D-I-N-G!

  • Really? Really? Yeah, it’s crazy, we know, but apparently the couple is recording a new single together for Brown’s new album. E! News reports that the two of them are working with producer Polow Da Don on a new track.
  • Lest you forget This couple has quite the recent history. Between the allegations, the pictures, and the massively bad PR juggernaut that’s endangering Brown’s career, you wouldn’t expect to see these two together. But they are.
  • The song, imaginedWe could be wrong about this, but there’s no way in heck that whatever they work on could be a club banger; no, this has to be dark, emotional, and with more emotional weight than “Umbrella.” We’ll see. source
