World: Iran: Oh, Neda died because she looked like a terrorist’s sister!

  • Yeah. That sounds suspect. The Iranian government says that the reason why the shooting victim known as Neda was killed in such a violent fashion despite the fact that she wasn’t even protesting was because she looked like the sister of a known terrorist. Oh, and they also blamed her death on the throngs of people protesting, or as they called them, “those groups who want to create division in the nation.” Hm. Hmmmmmmmm. source

World: Key sentence from this Iran protest story that should anger you

  • It was impossible to confirm first-hand the extent of the new violence in the capital because of draconian new press restrictions on coverage of the post-election mayhem.
  • New York Times reporters Nazila Fathi and Alan Cowell • In a story about the latest rash of Iranian violence. Hundreds of protesters fought with riot police today and at least some people were confirmed dead in the melee. This is just getting awful, awful, awful. • source

World: Khamenei: We won’t budge, no matter how much pressure we get

  • I had insisted and will insist on implementing the law on the election issue. Neither the establishment nor the nation will yield to pressure at any cost.
  • Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei • In comments about the hard-line stance his country will take against the protesters who have so gathered the world’s attention. In other news, Mir Hossein Mousavi’s wife has asked the country to free political prisoners arrested during the protests. Let’s hope they do. • source

U.S., World: Looking for Obama to be more forceful? Get ready to be pushed

  • I strongly condemn these unjust actions, and I join with the American people in mourning each and every innocent life that is lost.
  • President Barack Obama • In a speech about the Iran conflict where he specifically took the response to the protests to task. Dude has been feeling the pressure about not getting too involved in Iran’s political struggle, despite Iran complaining saying he is. Obama has noted that he’s trying not to give the country an excuse that the U.S. was somehow at fault. Feeling forced yet? • source

World: Wow. In this protest video, the cameraman was beaten.

  • This is scary. The protest starts out peaceful, than the riot police comes, and one of the victims is the guy holding the camera. (For those with weak stomachs, the violent action happens off-camera.)source

World: The current state of Tehran: Unease between military, protesters

  • After a long Saturday, things have (temporarily) quieted. On Saturday, we learned two things about the nature of the Iran protests: One, the government is no longer willing to accept peaceful dissent; and two, protesters are willing to risk their lives in the fight for the rights of the country’s people. Today, things have calmed down, but are expected to heat up again later in the day. Even if the protests calmed down after today, deep political wounds are now out in the open – something the Iranian government will struggle with easing. source

Politics, World: Analyst: Iran’s government is making a big mistake

  • Now they’ll have to hold their ground and hope that people don’t keep coming back. But history has taught us that people in these situations lose their initial sense of fear and become emboldened by brutality.
  • Mehrdad Khonsari • A consultant for the Center for Arab and Iranian Studies, based in London. Khonsari says that he feels the regime is taking an “enormous risk” by handling things this way. It could make things worse for them in the long run. • source

U.S., World: Obama’s quoting MLK in support of Iran protests

  • Martin Luther King once said, ‘The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.’ I believe that. The international community believes that. And right now, we are bearing witness to the Iranian people’s belief in that truth, and we will continue to bear witness.
  • President Barack Obama • Speaking on the Iranian protests. Taking a different turn from the guarded language he had previously been using to describe the conflict, he’s now actively encouraging the protests by Iranians. Which, of course, should make Iranian leadership happy. • source
