Politics: Daily Poll: An absurdly early 2012 GOP presidential straw poll

  • The Washington Post’s Monday Fix got us to thinking this week due to their power list of Republicans in 2012. Sarah Palin is on top of it. And in a minor upset, Tim Pawlenty is in front of Mitt Romney. And Mike “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” Huckabee is standing pat in fourth. Now, we know it’s early and it doesn’t mean anything, but we’d like to know who you’d most likely vote for in 2012, if given the choice. This is obviously unscientific and mostly for fun. And feel free to tell us how much you hate (insert object of scorn here) in the comments.source

Politics: What’s the upside to the White House’s “War on Fox News”?

  • If the White House could persuade moderates that any story originating with Fox is politically motivated and hence suspect, it might reduce the initial impact of Fox-generated content. What the White House appears to be trying to do is reduce the migration of stories from Fox to other cable, broadcast, and print.
  • Kathleen Hall Jamieson • The director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania, describing why the Obama administration seems to be so quick to go after Fox News, even though it’s a fairly controversial tactic. Maybe it’s self-preservation, since they seem to be going after Obama administration officials. Maybe it’s pushing for the moderates, not the far right. There has to be some upside here. • source

Politics: Obama: Republicans “do what they’re told.” Them’s fighting words!

  • We get the feeling that the summer of socialism allegations has permanently damaged the president’s ability to rise above political name-calling like this. Come on, Obama, don’t stoop to their level! Don’t trash on the GOP!source

World: Hamid Karzai’s learning to live with the idea of a runoff

The Afghan president has the look of a man hoping that the “anyone but Karzai” grassroots campaign didn’t get off the ground. source

World: The White House is cautiously optimistic on an Afghan runoff

  • There are any number of cliches you could choose from, but we’ll wait until the chickens are hatched.
  • A senior administration official • Discussing the White House’s happiness that there’s been a breakthrough in getting Afghan president Hamid Karzai to agree to a runoff, though there’s been no definitive agreement yet. Karzai had been fighting the idea of a runoff despite the fact that the UN found that many of the votes in his favor had been falsified. You still have a minor shot, Abdullah Abdullah! • source

World: Iran and Pakistan have some suicide bomb-related drama going on

  • We were informed that some security agents in Pakistan are co-operating with the main elements of this terrorist incident. We regard it as our right to demand these criminals from them.
  • Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad • Making a stand against the Pakistani elements that he says played a part in a suicide bombing that killed 35 people. While it’s possible that Ahmadinejad may be right about this, another Iranian leader claimed that the U.S. was involved, too – which, by the way, the U.S. denies. Which makes us think we need to take his claim with a grain of salt. • source

U.S.: George Bush the elder totally has Obama’s back

  • Politics is politics. But some things are bigger than that. He, like other Americans, would like to see the president be successful.
  • Former White House political director Ron Kaufman • Describing the warm relationship George H.W. Bush has with Barack Obama. Bush held an event honoring Obama’s public service last night, and despite the protests outside the Texas auditorium, it was a warm, festive affair inside. The elder Bush said that in challenging times, “the R or D next to your name is irrelevant.” Obama agreed. • source

Politics: OK, last bit about Obama’s Peace Prize. But this one’s a doozy.

  • [Yasser Arafat] got the Nobel Peace Prize. Excuse me, a terrorist got the Nobel Peace Prize. Some people deservedly so. You know who else deserved it? Ronald Reagan. And frankly, I would’ve given it to George Bush.
  • Sean Hannity • Making an argument in favor of George W. Bush getting the Nobel Peace Prize. We … we … don’t know what to say. Bravo Sean, you just left us unable to type. • source
