World: Piers Morgan’s tabloid past haunting his TV host present

  • So heartwarming that everyone in U.K.’s missing me so much they want me to come home.
  • CNN host Piers Morgan • Joking earlier this year in regards to allegations he faces over possible involvement in the News of the World phone-hacking scandal. Morgan, a former tabloid newspaper editor who’s built a second life as a TV host, will take part, via video-link, in a judicial inquiry into the alleged practices of “News of the World” and other British tabloids. Morgan’s past could come to haunt him in the future. source

U.S.: Howard Stern will be on NBC primetime. Get ready for plenty of #%&@s.

  • I am going to tell you your kiddie has no talent…this nonsense of Howie and Sharon putting through less than talented people has got to stop. Under my administration, there will be no Frank Sinatra impersonators winning.
  • Howard Stern • On his new job as judge on “America’s got Talent,” replacing Piers Morgan, who’s going to focus on his popular CNN show. Some people are not on board with the new addition to the show, while others are ready for the honesty he’ll bring to the table. Especially Stern. “I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, but feelings are going to be hurt,” Stern said. Will this discourage some of the softer competitors from trying out or force a tougher crowd? Who knows. We’re just excited to see what names Stern plans to call little children. source

Politics: BURN: College student schools Rick Santorum on gay parenting

  • This is officially our new favorite video. In it, Rick Santorum (speaking to a group of students at Penn State on Tuesday night) makes a strong argument why he’s not a bigot for thinking gay marriage is wrong, and a student tears into him, basically shutting down his argument. This is arguably more damaging than his Piers Morgan interview, where the bigotry charge came up. Rick Santorum, you just got shut down by a college studentsource

Politics: Piers Morgan nails the “Hurricane Irene Overhyped” meme to the wall

  • How many have to be killed for you to assess this as serious enough?
  • Piers Morgan • During a suitably dramatic debate on whether the media overhyped coverage of Hurricane Irene. Morgan and a couple of his fellow guests — New York Times super-reporter Brian Stelter and meteorologist Chad Meyers — ripped into the Washington Times’ Joseph Curl, who claimed that the storm was in fact overhyped. Curl was against a stacked jury: Stelter (who is on Tumblr) had just gotten back from North Carolina, Meyers is a meteorologist and Morgan is a sucker for passionate quotes. The overhyped argument loses again in the media sphere. Now, let’s go talk about getting some donations to people who need it. source

Politics: Christine O’Donnell apparently had too much going on Wednesday night

  • I want to apologize for being so late, I know that’s not respectful of your time, so please accept my apology. We started out at about five o’clock in the morning at Fox and Friends and we’ve gone nonstop until the final stop at CNN a few minutes ago.
  • Christine O’Donnell • Talking to the Women’s National Republican Club in NYC on Wednesday night — a meeting she had apparently double-booked with the taping of “Piers Morgan Tonight” — you know, the one she walked out on after being asked a question about gay marriage. Sounds like someone made up a mini-controversy in an effort to get out of something. source

Politics: Christine O’Donnell walks off Piers Morgan’s show over gay marriage

  • Welcome back, Christine! Piers Morgan asked Christine O’Donnell about gay marriage, and she wouldn’t discuss the topic because it wasn’t relevant to her book. She’s gonna talk about what she wants to talk about, and that ain’t gay marriage. “We turned down another interview,” she says. Hey Piers, ignore the comments about you being rude. You’re always charming in our book. Christine O’Donnell, meanwhile, is now on the same level as Carrie Prejeansource

Politics: Did Piers Morgan know about voice mail hacking?

  • Say it ain’t so, Piers: Should CNN be worried about Piers Morgan? Private investigator Jonathan Rees, who paid off police to gain access to confidential information (and definitely fits Gordon Brown’s “criminal” descriptor), allegedly worked for The Daily Mirror when Morgan was the editor. Moreover, a British political blogger today alleged that Piers knew an award-winning scoop about a soccer manager having an affair was obtained through voice mail hacking. This is obviously not close to hard evidence, but nonetheless is worth keeping an eye on; lest we forget, Morgan was fired from that editorship after The Daily Mirror admitted to running faked photos of British soldiers abusing Iraqi civilians. source

Politics: Chris Christie on his use of a state helicopter to attend son’s game

  • I’m not admitting it was wrong. What I’m saying is that, if the public perceives for a moment that I’m using that for a perk of office, I want to take that away from them right away. But I would not make a different decision if I had to do it again because it was important for me as a father to be there for my son.
  • New Jersey Governor Chris Christie • Speaking with Piers Morgan, in an interview to be aired tonight. Morgan asked Christie about his decision to use a state helicopter to attend his son’s basketball game. Christie replied that it’s important to him to be there for his son, which is a quality that speaks well for Christie’s character as a family man. It is, however, a strictly personal motivation to fly to watch his son play. It has no value whatsoever to the people, and it’s undeniably what he’s concerned some might view it as, a perk of his office. He also makes it clear that his decision to pick up the tab on the flight was not about a standard of ethics, just image management. Which, even though this story isn’t that major, is an odd thing to admit on national television. Maybe that speaks well for Christie, too — this seems like a pretty honest answer, if not a politically tactful one. source

Culture: Piers Morgan says Charlie Sheen “the Che Guevera of television”

  • I’m super-bitchin’ [and] I don’t believe myself to be an addict.
  • Charlie Sheen • In the key quote in his whole rant with Piers Morgan, which was a big score for him because, well, he was sort of a surprise guest. This certainly is going to be a punch-up for Piers’ ratings, and of course, because the CNN host delves in the soft stuff like his predecessor Larry King did, he used the phrase “the Che Guevera of television” to describe Charlie. We want this on a T-Shirt, stat. source

Culture: Oprah on Piers Morgan: Actually saying newsworthy stuff

Oprah was pregnant at 14. She thought about killing herself, ashamed of the stigma of teen pregnancy. She lost the baby. “When the baby died, I knew that it was my second chance.” Whoa. source
