  • Friday Ralph Steinman, a senior physician at Rockefeller University noted for his research into dendritic cells, dies after suffering from pancreatic cancer for the past four years. A big loss for the world of medicine.
  • Monday The Nobel Prize Committee awards the Nobel Price for Medicine. Steinman won for his research into the immune system. They don’t give out prizes posthumously. The Nobel folks didn’t know. source

U.S.: She’ll be OK: Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg hospitalized

  • It’s a precaution. Ginsburg, who was being treated for an iron deficiency, fell ill today and passed out. They took her to the hospital, where she is currently being held. The 76-year-old Ginsburg revealed earlier this year that she’s suffering from pancreatic cancer, so everyone’s on pins and needles about the Supreme Court justice’s health. source

Culture: Reports of Patrick Swayze’s death: Wildly exaggerated, until it was true

  • Fake death reports kept cropping up for months. Back in May, The Vancouver Sun wrote this article about how reports of Patrick Swayze’s death were tweeted heavily for months, despite the fact they weren’t true. People knew that the actor had been in ill health for months, but many pulled the trigger too early. “Someone shouts out, ‘Patrick Swayze is dead!’ and you’re thrown into action straight away,” notes Hello! Canada editor-in-chief Ciara Hunt. And at that point, it just tweeted out of control. When millions of boys are crying wolf, eventually it doesn’t matter if it isn’t true. source

World: Kim Jong Il and Steve Jobs have something in common
