Politics: President Obama reassures American Muslims: ‘no war on Islam’

  • I’ve made clear, just as President Bush did shortly after 9/11, that our war is not against Islam. Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader; he was a mass murderer of Muslims. Indeed, al Qaeda has slaughtered scores of Muslims in many countries, including our own. So his demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity.
  • President Barack Obama • In his speech tonight, announcing that a U.S. special operation had killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. The President takes a very good tact here in distancing bin Laden and his organization from the Muslim community writ large. His reminder that bin Laden had himself killed many Muslims in service of his terror campaigns (and within our nation, as well, with many Muslims killed on 9/11) is an important one, too often lost in recent politicking. Even amidst what looks like broad jubilation domestically at the news, it’s important to keep the celebrating a positive thing, not something that turns at all ugly on our Muslim brethren. The President clearly wanted to short circuit that, as best he could, by emphasizing solidarity. source

World: War on terror: Bin Laden’s current shelter not very cave-like?

  • cave The type of structure that Osama bin Laden has been rumored to be hiding in since around 2002 or so.
  • house The type of structure that a senior NATO official says bin Laden is hiding in right now. source
  • » Our question: If Osama has been hiding out in a house, does he have cable, or at least an Xbox 360? If not, he’s really living primitively.

World: Osama bin Laden’s latest possible message: Help with relief

  • Talk about striking a different tone. The al-Qaeda leader is asking his fellow Muslims to help with relief efforts in flood-ravaged Pakistan. “The catastrophe (in Pakistan) is very big and it is difficult to describe it,” he said. “What we are facing … calls for generous souls and brave men to take serious and prompt action to provide relief for their Muslim brothers in Pakistan.” This feels like a new side of an old foe. source

Politics: Fidel Castro convinced Osama bin Laden is a U.S. spy

  • Who showed that he [Bin Laden] is indeed a CIA agent was WikiLeaks. It proved it with documents.
  • Former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro • Saying some crazy crap about Osama bin Laden, the CIA, George W. Bush and Wikileaks. We wish we could add more to this, but we simply can’t. It’s just too crazy. source

World: Protip to Americans: Don’t take the War on Terror into your own hands

  • Pakistan just nailed a dude who was trying to do just that. The man, identified as Gary Brooks Faulkner, was carrying a sword, dagger, gun, night-vision goggles, a night-vision camera, and some sort of Christian literature (probably a Chick tract). Strangely enough, it’s only the first case of an American trying to catch the dude himself in an attempt to get a $25 million reward – well, actually, it’s the first case that we know about. source

Politics: Attorney General Eric Holder knows how to use big words

  • I am not trying to dodge this one, I just don’t think the possibility of catching him alive is infinitesimal.
  • Attorney General Eric Holder • Speaking in Congress today about the possibility of catching Osama bin Laden alive. He suggests that the al-Qaeda leader would either be killed by U.S. Special Forces or his own people as a protective measure. To wit, Holder also said a bunch of things which should make him seem like the Republicans’ least favorite person ever, suggesting if he were to make it the the U.S., he should be tried in criminal court. He also compared bin laden to Charles Manson, although Rep. John Culberson was leading him into making that statement. source
