Biz, U.S.: Oil spill: Is Obama’s oil-drilling ban actually getting followed?

  • seven new offshore drilling projects have been given the go-ahead since Obama banned new drilling projects
  • five projects have gotten environmental waivers like the controversial one that leaky oil rig got source
  • » Oh, and also: There were even more approvals and waivers approved in the period between the April 20th blast that caused the spill and when the Obama administration announced the changes. Oh boy. That doesn’t look good.

Politics: A Republican somehow won Obama’s home seat in Hawaii

How’d he win? He used this phrase: “The congressional seat is not owned by one political party. This congressional seat is owned by the people.” Thanks, Scott Brown! source

Politics: What the GOP wants from Elena Kagan: A tight interpretation

  • I think we’ll be looking at her testimony because she has so little other record, it’s going to be a big deal. It’s so important how she testifies.
  • Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions • Discussing why Elena Kagan’s upcoming testimony will be key in building a lot of opinions of her. Regarding what he’s looking for, he says Republicans would like to know “whether her philosophy of law is so broad in her interpretation of the Constitution that you are not faithful to the Constitution and laws.” This isn’t something to be taken lightly. The last nominee who didn’t have judicial experience, Bush-selected Harriet Meiers, was withdrawn due in part to lack of experience. Kagan has a better record than Meiers did, but the lack of judicial experience could be a deal-breaker for some if she doesn’t answer questions to their liking. source

Politics: Bill Maher makes an astute point about Obama and Apple

  • Barack Obama got all fuddie duddie, and Bill Maher put it into perspective. Simply put, Obama’s point from last week’s Hampton University commencement undercuts his status as the “cool” president, and Apple would probably run the country more efficiently than our current leadership (see the clogged drain that is the Senate). Great clip. source

Offbeat: Great: The phrase “Buffalo Cougar” has entered the lexicon

  • When he got to us I asked if I could hug him. And when I did I just said, ‘he’s a hottie, with a smokin’ little body’.
  • Luann “Buffalo Cougar” Haley • Regarding her WTF encounter with president Obama yesterday. Haley tried to play it off as a joke that the president was in on, but we all know the truth. She’s the new Monica Lewinsky. Or the new Linda Tripp. We’re still trying to figure that one out. source

World: In Indonesia, a plot to kill Obama during a state visit was foiled

  • They had some very ambitious plans. Inspired by the Mumbai attacks a couple years ago, a group of Indonesian militants planned to trigger a number of attacks on Jakarta on August 17th, when Obama was planning to come to town for a state visit, in an attempted coup. The group, reportedly a splinter group of the al-Qaeda-tied Jemaah Islamiah group, was busted back in February during a raid. Wow. source

Politics: Eric Cantor’s YouCut program: If nothing else, innovative

  • It feels like a Republican take on an Obama campaign tactic. The House Minority Whip has made the YouCut program a participatory way of getting involved in an activity everyone loves: Cutting wasteful spending in the federal government. Concerned citizens vote by text message, and the winner gets put up for a vote in the House. The top line item? Cutting the Presidential Election Fund, which John McCain took advantage of in 2008 but Obama didn’t. source
