These guys could use a better P.R. adviser but the point is we need to get this oil stopped. … If you’re going to advocate expansion of government it doesn’t look very good when the government you’re already in charge of doesn’t function so well.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell • Discussing the dual PR screw-ups of BP CEO Tony Hayward (at a yachting race) and Barack Obama (at a golf course) on Saturday were bad moves for each. CNN and TVOne political analyst Roland S. Martin had a pretty apt point about this: Rahm Emanuel’s criticism of Hayward left Obama open for the same criticism. Protip: If you guys need a mental health break for a day, stay home. Even world leaders need to tune out for a few hours. And Hayward’s big problem is that hanging out near oil-bought yachts makes you look like an elitist jerk – not that he took the break at all. source
I was disappointed this week to see a dreary and familiar politics get in the way of our ability to move forward on a series of critical issues that have a direct impact on people’s lives.
President Barack Obama • In his weekly radio address this week. What’s the president so upset about? First, the Senate stonewalled his latest stimulus plan. It wasn’t just the GOP – a number of Democrats voted against it, too. Second, he’s ticked that he can’t get a bill through uncapping how much the oil companies can pay to individuals. “We should remove that cap,” he said. “But the Republican leadership won’t even allow a debate or a vote.” But, here’s the big one: Obama’s been in office for a year and a half, and he still has 136 position appointments being held up in the Senate. “I know the political season is upon us in Washington,” he said. “But gridlock as a political strategy is destructive to the country.” We agree. source
Every day seems to bring more bad news about the size and scope of this crisis, and reversing that trend should be the president’s priority. The White House may view this oil spill as an opportunity to push its agenda in Washington, but Americans are more concerned about what it plans to do to solve the crisis at hand.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell • Emphasizing that climate change that Obama anchored tonight’s address on didn’t actually do anything about the problem currently on the ground. Which, let’s admit it, is both true and what Mitch was going to say. We don’t disagree with him but think the issues aren’t so clear-cut. source
Let’s face it. Obama’s good with discussing broad. But when it comes to specifics with the American people, he’s a little lacking. The truth of the matter is that there’s not really much new here. Pretty much the one thing that is new, or at least explained in better detail, is the BP escrow fund, which Obama had this to say about it: “This fund will not be controlled by BP. In order to ensure that all legitimate claims are paid out in a fair and timely manner, the account must and will be administered by an independent, third party.” source
Wait, wait, hear us out. Our boy Nicholas Kristof threw this idea by us. Essentially, Obama’s problem is that he can’t focus on getting stuff done the way David Cameron can because he has to spend all his time worrying about public appearances and traveling the world. He’s had to delay his trip to Indonesia and Australia twice because of the oil spill, which he’s getting crapped on about anyway, because he’s focused on the nitty-gritty rather than the showy. Germany has a president who just makes public appearances; Japan’s emperor does the same thing. Why does the U.S. need one guy to shoulder the whole job? It’s a tough job. source
