U.S.: Why Obama vacationing in the Gulf Coast is actually good PR

  • $34
    billion
the amount the Gulf Coast made from tourism in 2008, which created 400,000 jobs
  • $22.7 billion the amount the Gulf could lose due to the spill taking a bite out of tourism (hence Obama’s vacation) source

Politics: Did Obama have anything to say about that immigration bill?

  • NO he signed it into law without any public comments source
  • » Though in his defense … Obama may not have allowed reporters when he signed the bill into law, but he did make a statement after the Senate passed it in a one-person-strong voice vote yesterday. “The resources made available through this legislation will build upon our successful efforts to protect communities along the Southwest border and across the country,” he wrote.

Politics: And here’s a pretty depressing quote to add to the mix

  • The president does oppose same-sex marriage, but he supports equality for gay and lesbian couples, and benefits and other issues, and that has been effectuated in federal agencies under his control.
  • Top White House adviser David Axelrod • Saying – somewhat unbelievably – that Obama still opposes gay marriage. Wasn’t this supposed to be the president that was going to stand up for gay rights? What the hell kind of standing up is that? While Obama opposed Prop 8, according to Axelrod (because it was “mean-spirited”), that still doesn’t take back the fact that the president has provided lip service and little else to the gay rights movement. Yes, it’s a political football. Yes, it’ll be hard to deal with among certain bases. But how can he, at this point, not support gay marriage? Unbelievable. source

Politics: Mindbender: Guy makes racist comix, claims they’re not racist

  • I do not understand the connection with ‘big ears’ and ‘racism’, and I do not understand how a ‘dark face’ implies racism … The accusation of ‘hate’ is true, but it is the hate of an IDEOLGY, not a of race of people …
  • The anonymous author of Tea Party Comix • In an e-mail to underground comix collector Ethan Persoff, regarding his works, which parody Barack Obama in a very offensive way. We’ll let you see them if you really want to (note: racist comix at the link), but beyond the clearly incendiary design of them, they’re subversive in an R. Crumb/early Art Spiegelman way. Which is not to defend them but to note their obvious inspiration. These comix have drawn a lot of attention in the last few days, with the Modern Tea Party claiming they were planted by the Democrats, and everyone else in simple disbelief. Including us. What a terrible idea. source

U.S., World: Obama’s ready to end major combat operations in Iraq

  • He plans to announce it in about a hour. Ready to see one of our wars go away? Well, get ready. Obama plans to announce that he plans to wind down major combat operations in Iraq. Instead, the U.S. will still take an advisory role. It’s not without risk, however – see, Iraq doesn’t have a stable government right now – but he still plans to make the announcement to a bunch of veterans today. He will not, however, declare “Mission Accomplished.” Probably a smart political move on his part, guys. source

Politics: Incomplete: Obama gives himself a more accurate grade

  • People have every right to be scared, to be angry, to be frustrated. I don’t expect the American people to be satisfied when we’re only half of the way back.
  • President Barack Obama • Backpedaling from his eight-month-old claims that his administration earned “a solid B+” for its work. Of course, that angered a bunch of people who feel like he hasn’t done his job completely. So now, he’s taking a different approach to the whole grade thing. “We still have a long way to go,” he says. But on the other hand, he claimed that his administration wasn’t getting the credit it deserves. So yeah, in the back of his mind, he’s still thinking, “we’re totally a B+, and we passed health care!” source

Politics: President Obama to Rep. Charlie Rangel: Drop Dead

  • I think Charlie Rangel served a very long time and served his constituents very well. But these allegations are very troubling. He’s somebody who’s at the end of his career. Eighty years old. I’m sure that what he wants is to be able to end his career with dignity. And my hope is that it happens.
  • President Barack Obama • Saying that Charlie Rangel should retire and just go away. The House ethics subcommittee has recommended a reprimand for Rangel, which would be light compared to the censure and expulsion he could get. Still, though, Rangel won’t admit his guilt and as a result is making the situation much worse for himself. But if he’s so convinced of his innocence, should he quit? source

Politics: Obama: The Wikileaks documents are sensitive … but not really

  • I’m concerned about the disclosure of sensitive information from the battlefield that could potentially jeopardize individuals or operations. … The fact is these documents don’t reveal any issues that haven’t already informed our public debate about Afghanistan.
  • President Barack Obama • Saying one thing but immediately contradicting himself. If this data was so sensitive, how come it doesn’t reveal an issues that haven’t already informed our public debate? Security experts suggest that the documents don’t create an immediate threat, but note that the tendency is dangerous. Tying this into last week’s “Top Secret America” thang that the Post did, it’s possible that the government’s tendency to overclassify documents hit here too. But this sort of doublespeak simply doesn’t get us anywhere. source
