U.S.: Harlem shop owner on killing robbers: “I did the only thing I could do”

  • I did the only thing I could do at that time. Tried as long as I could not to, tried to get out of it; they wouldn’t let me get out of it.

Culture: Skateboarder Andy Kessler died of an insect bite. An insect bite.

  • Kessler wrote the book on skateboarding in NYC. From Central Park to random apartment complexes, he always found a spot to skate. He stayed with it, fighting back from an era of drug addiction to become an elder statesman for the sport, later opening up skate parks. source
  • Andy Kessler’s death was sudden. After getting stung by a wasp, he suffered an allergic reaction which led to a heart attack. How does this happen? Well, some people – 5% of the U.S. population – are susceptible to insect allergies. 40 die each year. Kessler, sadly was one. source

Apparently the man “was just acting crazy,” which led to the evacuation sure, but sounds like the vaguest description ever. source

U.S.: Today’s the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Here’s a history.

  • What was it? The riots happened at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village. The fight, the result of a failed raid by police, escalated in a violent fashion, with hundreds of protesters outnumbering officers, throwing bricks and beer bottles, and setting the bar on fire. Four officers were hurt in the melee. source

  • Why this was big Before this altercation, the gay rights movement had not fought back against the police officers who had gone out of their way to shut down bars they frequented and attacked gays and lesbians. The riot was spontaneous and a culmination of dealing with years of abuse. Simply put, they got sick of having to live in fear. source

  • The end result The altercation, which created tensions for days afterward, led to organization that the LGBT movement didn’t have until that point. Every major moment of the gay rights movement – including protests, gay-themed publications, gay pride parades and the rise of Harvey Milk – can trace its roots to that night. source

Politics, U.S.: Republicans criticize Obama for going out on a date

  • As President Obama prepares to wing into Manhattan’s theater district on Air Force One to take in a Broadway show, GM is preparing to file bankruptcy and families across America continue to struggle to pay their bills.
  • RNC spokeswoman Gail Gitcho • On the president’s choice to take a night off from his job and go out on a date with his wife Michelle in New York City. We think her argument that Obama’s taking the night off from one of the hardest white-collar jobs you’ll find is overblown (especially since Bush set a high mark for vacation days), but her side argument that Obama shouldn’t be spending taxpayer money on this is spot-on. Obama is taking the smaller plane, but it still costs lots of money to run it. • source

Politics, U.S.: Protip: Don’t get on NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg’s bad side

  • Reporter Azi Paybarah of the New York Observer dared to ask a question about the improving economy which seemed to undercut Bloomberg’s reasoning for running for a third term. It was an honest question. source
  • Bloomberg responded harshly, telling him, “When you have a serious question about the economy, I’d be happy to answer it.” He then ended the news conference by calling Paybarah a disgrace. LOL. source
