U.S.: Gavin Newsom: Not the next governor of California. By choice.

  • With a young family and responsibilities at City Hall, I have found it impossible to commit the time required to complete this effort the way it needs to – and should be – done.
  • San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom • Describing his reasons for no longer running for governor of California. It was a sudden drop-out, one precipitated by Attorney General Jerry Brown’s staggering lead over him in the Democratic primary. The center-leaning Newsom tried really hard to replicate Obama’s social-networking success but couldn’t pull it off. Too bad. Seems like he would’ve been a good governor based on his success in the Bay Area. • source

U.S.: Bing: Not the search engine, the straight-talking Detroit mayor

Back in the day, Dave Bing was a basketball star on the Detroit Pistons. Now he’s the guy cutting jobs (and resources) left and right in a hard-hit city. source

U.S.: Milwaukee proves that pipe beatings are making a comeback

  • That’s what made Milwaukee famous? The mayor of Milwaukee learned last night that doing nice things for people can end up in tears. After chilling at the Wisconsin State Fair, Mayor Tom Barrett heard a woman screaming, and went to help her. Instead, he got beat by a man with a lead pipe. What is this, River City Ransom? Barrett was in stable condition in the hospital, while the 20-year-old who did this to him was arrested. You know, we could use fewer pipe beatings, not more. source

Culture, U.S.: Brad Pitt, from movie star to New Orleans mayor?

Brad Pitt for mayor
  • There’s t-shirts bearing this image already. There’s a history of Pitt doing good things for the city – convincing Frank Gehry to design houses for Hurricane Katrina victims. And there’s (tongue-in-cheek) grassroots support for the dude. He doesn’t seem interested, though. But he seems amused by the idea, though.source

World: Romanian mayor: I’m not a Nazi, I just love Tom Cruise!

  • Dressing up like a Nazi is not a smart move. Duh. But a mayor in Romania obviously didn’t quite have that figured out when he went to a fashion parade dressed as one, swastika and all. Outrage followed. So today he said sorry, and added that it was a reference to the movie (and guy) “Valkyrie.” He explained: “I appreciate those who wanted to assassinate the mad dictator.” source

U.S.: D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty: Blame us for the Metro crash

  • We do have an independent train system… [but] let’s not try and disperse the blame. Let’s put it on the decision makers and the leaders.
  • Adrian Fenty • Speaking this morning on “Good Morning America,” taking blame for Monday’s D.C. Metro crash, which killed nine people. The cause of the crash appears to be faulty, outdated equipment which wasn’t replaced when recommended, as the train driver (who was also killed) did press the emergency brake and there were were automatic mechanisms in place that should have prevented the crash. The fact that Fenty is so willing to put his neck out is bold. • source

Politics, U.S.: Protip: Don’t get on NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg’s bad side

  • Reporter Azi Paybarah of the New York Observer dared to ask a question about the improving economy which seemed to undercut Bloomberg’s reasoning for running for a third term. It was an honest question. source
  • Bloomberg responded harshly, telling him, “When you have a serious question about the economy, I’d be happy to answer it.” He then ended the news conference by calling Paybarah a disgrace. LOL. source

Offbeat: Love, immigration status tear mayor apart from Texas city

  • It’s true love, but his gay lover needs a visa. J.W. Lown, the mayor of San Angelo, Texas, stepped down from his position abruptly yesterday, preferring not to use his power to help his boyfriend in Mexico make it to the U.S. before others. Lown was a very popular mayor in San Angelo, and was last elected to office with 89% of the vote. He holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Mexico. source
