U.S.: Painful, sad irony: Gun-toting soccer mom killed by a gun

  • Her husband pulled the trigger, then killed himself. In 2008 Meleanie Hain of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, became a hero to Second Amendment types for choosing to carry a gun at her daughter’s soccer game and fighting for her right to do so. Last night, she became a victim of painful irony, as her husband shot her and then killed himself. There are no words for how bizarre that is. source

World: One Saudi guy boasted about sex on TV. Now the network’s closed.

  • Saudi Arabia isn’t putting up with that #&*@. The Saudi offices of Lebanese channel LBC were closed, weeks after Mazen Abdul Jawad was shown explaining foreplay and cruisin’ techniques on one of the network’s shows. Saudi Arabia is an incredibly conservative country, so this was a system shock. Abdul Jawad now faces charges for publicizing vice which could be punishable by the death penalty. Man, we wonder what would happen if we beamed five minutes of MTV into Saudi Arabia. source

U.S., World: The Somali pirates have been really darn busy since last week

  • Four freighters in two days?! Sure, the rescue of Capt. Richard Phillips got all the headlines, but on other fronts, the pirates just keep doing their thing. In the last two days alone, they’ve captured four different freighters with origin points as varied as Egypt and Lebanon.
  • An American ship attacked The latest incident involved The Liberty Sun, a ship bringing humanitarian aid to Kenya. That ship was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons, and suffered damage, but the crew managed to keep them off the ship. source

World: Lebanon just complicated matters in Israel

  • On top of everything else … On the 13th day of Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, a series of rockets came from southern Lebanon, bombing parts of northern Israel. No one has stepped forward to admit to the attack.
  • A violation of a peace agreement Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora condemned the attacks, claiming they violated a 2006 peace agreement that Israel signed with Lebanon’s Hezbollah militia. source
