  • Some Web site you’ve never heard of, BlueBeat.com, starts selling Beatles songs for a quarter a piece based on a strange bastardization of copyright law. source
  • The rights holders, EMI, are just like, “nuh uh,” and sued the company. You know, EMI, if you put the Beatles catalogue on iTunes, it could be awesome. source

Biz: Found: Dead guy in a pool. A Bernie Madoff associate. Rich.

  • Jeffry Picower was described as Bernie’s greatest beneficiary. Remember when Ken Lay of Enron died at a convenient time? Looks like he has a new golfing buddy. Picower, one of the 400 wealthiest Americans, was found dead in his multimillion-dollar mansion in Florida. While authorities aren’t suspecting foul play or suicide (he was suffering from Parkinson’s Disease and had heart problems), it’s worth noting that he was in the midst of being sued for $7.2 billion regarding funds he supposedly controlled in the Madoff case. source

U.S.: America’s biggest prick … er, “toughest sheriff” investigated

  • He’s unconstitutionally acted to racially profile many persons in the community, persons who appear or are Latino.
  • ACLU lawyer Dan Pochoda • Describing why Maricopa County, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio is a big jerk who they’re suing for racial profiling. He’s also under investigation by the Justice Department for violating civil rights. This is the guy who puts people (including Charles Barkley!) in jail wearing old-school prison stripes and pink underwear. • source

Tech: Comparing apples to apples: Woolworths vs. … um, Apple

A row of apples
  • Woolworths apple Looks like a worm has already gotten to it, based on its loopy shape. It’s got a firm kind of plastic, which tells you that the apple is genetically modified. Is the subject of a scary lawsuit from the Apple on the right. source

  • Bad apple Brown, a little shady on the inside. Makes you want to not eat it. We wanted to get a nice apple, but we were in a hurry this morning so we grabbed the very first apple off the tree we could find. Good enough for our purposes. source

  • Apple logo Not very organic. Made of chrome. Probably tough to bite into. Probably a few transistors in there somewhere. Was sued heavily by a much more musical Apple back in the day, and is now paying it forward. Good job. source

Tech: Amazon’s long Orwellian nightmare is finally over

  • There was a settlement in the “1984” lawsuit. Amazon, which deleted a bunch of George Orwell’s books off users’ Kindles, did not admit guilt in the $150,000 settlement (which largely goes to the lawyers and literacy charities; no word on what the plaintiffs got), but they did agree not to delete content off of users’ Kindles without their consent. Which is what everyone wanted in the first place. source
